OK,im hearing a few different variations on the right and not-so-right ages to buy a glider. I bought my first male about 3 days ago from a Incredible Pets (local Melbourne Fl petstore) and according to the person that they get their gliders from, he was 24 days OOP when i bought him, they gave me this powder type formula stuff that you mix with water and they told me to feed it to my baby e4very 4 hours for about ten days. Is this a bad thing? he has been taking 2 "pipettes" (their little plastic droppers that look similar to needleless syrynges)the formula readily and without any problems, in fact he likes it. Anyways...what do i do next? Any help would be appreciated and by the way, i got the MacPherson book, and its great! Im so glad i found a place where people know what theyre talking about and are here to help me. Thanks so much you guys! smile ~*Anjel*~ smile

24 days is definately too young to adopt out. Do you know what kind of formula they gave you? I would feed every two hours as much as he'll eat. Next week make a batch of Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters and start hand feeding that. I will come back with the link for that. This is a modified version of the recipe that is in Caroline's book. It isn't in metric form and doesn't require a day old chick(yuck)!

I agree with Rachel2. That's too young to be getting a glider. A glider should be eating one his own/without having to handfeed it when you get it. Most often this is about 6 weeks after they open their eyes. (My joeys generally open their eyes 7-14 days OOP - although I had one that came out early and didn't open his eyes for wuite a bit longer. Gliders tails are fully fluffy when weaned and should need no encouragement to eat.

Nekton-Lori? I do beleive that is bird food!! Lori's are nector eating birds and thus don't eat solid foods. Well, they make a pelleted diet for them now, but in the past, and even still, people feed them that kinda stuff, just mix with water. From what I have been reading on this board, you should be feeding him puppy/kitten milk replacer, but I am no expert (except maybe on birds smile )

No, Nekton-Lory I think is similar to that Lory-Life stuff, which are both glider suppliments. I don't know much about either of them because I do not use anything like that. Good Luck!

Lori-Nector is GLIDERAID. The Joey needs marsupial milk replacer. You can order it and ask for a speedy send from sugarglider.net.
I agree with making the Bourbons Mod. Leadbeaters and giving the little guy all he wants.

Ellen is correct. Joeys should be fed Esbilac puppy/kitten/small animal milk replacer until they are 8 weeks OOP. You can get this at any petstore and yes, even wal mart has it. You can also get marsupial milk online at Sugarglider.net I believe but It would be more convenient to go get some esbilac. Good luck and make sure you keep the baby warm also and spend LOTS of time with it. THat is too young to be away from his mother and he is getting no calcium or any form of proteins. Nekton Lori is in fact the same as Glideraid, and it is also fed to Lori (red birds) because all it really is is Nectar (hence the name Nekton?) Since Gliders to requite alot of fruit in their diet, I guess they thought they could raise a glider on this, but now you know this joey needs more. In the wild thy do drink sap, but they also eat bugs and need their proteins and calcium. Good Luck

the link for my modified leadbeaters,, when used for babies it is modified even more.. the basic link is.
<a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/leadbeat.html>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/leadbeat.html</a>
I do know that they are not adding the egg shell or the wheat germ for the rejected or orphaned joeys and they are diluting it even more with I believe carrot juice.

on the realstories page there is a story there about belle and baron by maria she tells you all you need to know, that is at....
<a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/realstories>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/realstories</a>

Maria has been nursing a glider that was 2 days oop, rejected when mom went out for the night and didn't return for a day.. long story, but she will be glad to tell it. That Joeys name is Rosie and doing great, she used the BML, with I think she said carrot juice.. you can contact her directly at.

If you can not get the marsupial milk replacier then use the pippy milk. Kitten milk is not as easy to digest and causes little glider babies to have really runny stools.
