Hey you guys! well I just called the vet and he is going to nueter skyler NEXT wednesday. I am very nervious. The vet has neutered sugar gliders before, I believe Glidervapors sugar glider was neutered by him. He seems to be a very good vet. I hope everything will go well. Now- what I am asking you is tell to me everything I should be worried about and shouldnt, what I should do BEFORE surgery and AFTER, how I should handle him after surgery, pain, pain pills anything you know! Even if you have never had a male neutered but know something- be sure to post! I need any advice I can get. Skyler is the world to me and if anything happened I dont know what I would do! Hey Skyler. The best advice I can give you is to visit with the vet as far as anything you should do before surgery ... I assume he will not want him to eat/drink the night before. At least that is what they tell you with cats/dogs.
The main thing to watch for after surgery is his trying to pull out stitches ... ask the vet about a collar for the first 10 days. It will keep him from being able to reach the stitches.
I'm afraid that's about all I can help you with. I'm sure someone else will post with more info.

I would suggest that you get an collar before hand, just in case. Your vet can probably give you one or help you make it. Don't worry too much though! I was so scared about getting Ramsey neutered, and he got through it really well. Good luck!

Kim...I am sorry if it seemed as if I were yelling. It wasnt that I was yelling I just wrote in CAPS. And I told you ANY advice is greatly appreciated . Most all male gliders do well with the surgery. However, I have just read some posts about four gliders that had the surgery. They have all had problems with tearing out their stitches several times and have become infected.
There is a much safer solution and you may want to discuss it with your vet first.
My vet uses anthesia to put the glider to sleep and then does the tie off method which is actually a suture tied securely above the sac. Then it drops off in ten days. I also know that with this procedure there is no pain nor irritation afterwards and there has not been any problems with mutalation nor infections.
Since Sugar Gliders are high risk for self mutalation this more than likely is the most humane way to go for neutering.
E-collars cause stress as the glider will fight it for hours and also unless it is made properly it has caused sores around the neck area.

Although I have not had any of my gliders neutered, I would opt for the solution Judie mentioned because I truly believe it is the least stressful option. Gliders really do tend to want to rip stitches out.

Its scary when your glider rips out its stitches. My boy first ripped out the glue that closed the incision and then the vet had to stitch him up, then he ripped out the stitches. And then the vet stitched him up and used glue, and this time we put an e-collar on him. It took 5 days of hard work taking care of my boy, but it was well worth it. His stitches are almost gone and there is no red or anything. I have never heard of the tying off procedure, but it does sound easier. Good luck with having your glider nuetered, everything will go fine I'm sure!
