This is my Sacer! His real name is Salem but I call him Sacer, short for "Flying Sacer"(not "Flying Saucer"). He was my pairs first born joey, in my hands he was birthed at 12:36 pm, August 26th, 1998. He came OOP Oct 28th, the day before my Bday. Ok, so as you know he's a very special boy. Ive never really noticed this before, but he has a very light gray/whitish colored head, gray mid body, and the end of his body is brownish! The black stripe on his back goes from black to dark brown at about halfway. His tail tip looks more dark brown than black and his tail is a light brownish/light gray.
Here are the pics!!!

Kim, has he always been marked like this or is he changing colors?
Could his diet have something to do with it? Do you know anything about the parents parents?

You might consider sending a copy of the pictures to Linda Altman at Southern Exotics. She does a few lines of colors so perhaps she may know something.

Kim-

Sacer was birthed in your hands???

What's the story behind this? I'm very curious about it, since it is very rare for people get a chance to see the birth of a sugar glider.

Kim:
It's ashweed, lol. He's adorably eunique. Maybe his coloration has a lot to do with chromozomes from his parents, but it sets him apart, wouldn't you say? lol. Anyways have you talked to Bourbon or anyone about it? They might have some suggestions on the matter.

Judie, Sacer was born with a very light colored head, but I never noticed the brown back, or the black stripe changing into dark brown. I checked and his father has the same brown, not a light head, but the brown back. Cher doesnt have it. I dont know about the diet having something to do with it or not, I do know Jers parents 4 or 5 generations up had wild caughts in the line. I had the pleasure of being bitten by them! LOL

Jasmine..Sacer was the first born in my hands. The pics arent really good but I think they're the first joey birth pics on the net. Here, they're on this page..

I missed the next set of twins birth cuz I was at work, but I took them and kept checking Chers pouch so I know roughly when they were born. The set of twins after that was born in my hands too, I was on the phone and Cher was on my lap, I saw her have the joeys and was watching them crawl into pouch as I was talking.. then one went backwards and got stuck in Chers dry fur behind her leg, so I had to untangle it and scoot it into pouch without squishing it. That was scary but it turned out to be a little girl and she was wonderful! Then, my last set of joeys I got the birth on video. Wow, that was Feb, 3rd, 2000! Almost a year ago already. I cant make anymore copies of the video just yet being its on an 8 mm and I need the camcorder to make copies. It destroys anything that goes in there now and no way am I putting my Cher birth video in there again and risking it. LOL I watched all of my joeys develop in pouch, Chers a very unique glider that allowed me to do that. I suggest not even touching that pouch when joeys are in it unless you know how to hold it open and not do any damage! The result of all I have seen and been through is this..

Wow!! That is really neat! His strip doesn't seem to reach the base of his tail. It kind of vanishes. But I am confused somewhat about this. I thought the wild caught gliders were that color because the color from the trees they lived in rubbed off onto their coat and after awhile of having them that they would eventually turn grey. Could it be that the brown color in the back part is due to them rubbing up on the branches in your cage or from their nest box? The only other colors I've seen before were the white gliders with black eyes and albinos with their pink eyes. Could it be a genetic mutation? Don't mean that in a negative way. If it wasn't for some unique genes coming out in dogs and cats, there wouldn't have been so many breeds. So that Sacer is really wild looking in the sense of being different not out in the wild. Very pretty coloring raspberry

What wonderful pictures! Kim, you are very lucky to have such a trusting little girl. Most females hide while giving birth.

Your description of the birth helps answer one a question of how the baby know where the pouch is. I guess the little ones follow their mom's trail of saliva. That is very neat!
