I got two young male gliders from a friend yesterday. I thought I would only get one and have handeled him several times in the last couple weeks. Well plans changed and I got both, which is great because now they won't be lonely. The only prob is that Bert(the first one) is friendly but the second(still up in the air on his name) is not. When I reach in the cage #2 gets in between Bert and I and crabs and bites. I would like to handle both but I can't understand why #2 is so protective of Bert. Any Ideas?

I've been trying to work with him while he is asleep but he wants nothing to do with me. I handeled him while his previous owner was here without any real probs. Aparently they were born about the same time from two different mothers and Berts parents were much friendlier than the others.

How about Ernie for your other name. I agree try bonding with him sepratly and while he is asleep is a good way. Do you have a bonding pouch? these help alot. feel free to contact me if you need one. Also try some apple sauce on your finger.

Well my roommate has named #2. He is now zerkseas, I know that can't be the right spelling but thats the way it sounds. The problem is that he is like master of the cage. As soon as I open the cage he's up in my face crabing. Bert will try to come when I talk sweet to him but zerkseas will climb over him and start pitching a fit. If tried hand feeding them but Zerkseas clearly doesn't want my hand in the cage.

Our male bonded to us darn near immediately, our female took over a month. They are both now equally sweet and friendly. Get your scent into their cage/pouch, and I also recommend you put your fist, fingers down, into the cage and hold it still -- leave it, even if you get bit, until he doesn't crab. Do this often. Move slowly and keep your hand fisted and palm down. #2 needs to realize your hand is not a threat. Read Bourbon's bonding page for more info on techniques.

By the way, the spelling is "Xerxes". He was a king of Prussia and big bad army general, if the "useless trivia" part of my brain is remembering right. Sounds like a fitting name for an aggressive little guy! :-)

It took my male glider a month to get use to us and it doesn't sound like you have had Xerxes for a very long time! Bonding takes time and patience! ;)
