 My sugarglider Shadow passed away today after 6 years of a good life in a very large cage.
I will miss her companionship very much. I am
uncertain as to the cause of her death.
My question is this. I know all the online documentation says that gliders live 8-15 years in captivity but a vet in N.Y. says that in her exsperiance most captive gliders live 5-6 years.
I would like to know if Shadow died of old age so
how many of you have gliders older than 6?

Most of older people on this board have only owned gliders for 2-5 years. So I can't really say that there are any old gliders on this board. My oldest glider is 2. That is how long I have owned gliders. I believe someone(help me Bourbon) owned a glider for 10 years before it passed. I can't remember who though. I want to say Cynthia.

Hi,
I know of a woman that i have read about in Glider Central that found her glider in the wild when he was a baby, she lives in australia and that was about 10+ years ago. Her Id name is pip_da_gal and her glider is name Poss. He really isn't a sugar glider but a squirell glider here isn't to much diff's. He looks about the size of a small cat. She is very luck that he lives so long cause it is very illegal to keep as pets there, and he has only been to a vet 2 times. I love reading her storys about poss. I hope this helps. I am so sorry to hear about your glider shadow, jesh I hope mine just lives an as long as your, i know it's hard here in the states casue gliders has only been here for about 7-10 i believe. I am just glad that we have message board like this one to help all of us learn and care for the little guys.

So very sorry to hear about Shadow. There is really no way to tell without a necropsy whether or not Shadow died of old age. If you saw no signs of illness before he passed away, then perhaps it was old age.

This was not a sugar glider as we know him, but this is sure a hefty guy. It is a very interesting story.

Rachel, Yes Cynthia did have a glider that was of an unknown age, she was a wild caught but the vet said he belived she was 10+ due to the osteoporises and other geratric sysmptoms she showed. Jane has hers, I believe hers is 6 or more. Maria has hers and she has had theem 7 years or more. Betsy just lost a rescue that was over 7 he was severly overweight when she got him, never gained or lost but he was believed to die of heart failure (primarily due to his weight), I think if anyone has a glider more than 6 years they are doing great. Baybe is 5.. but the 15 years is a figure they can get to, much like many humans can reach 90, with proper diet, exercise and medical care. Now where do the gliders fall into this line? Well many years ago the diets were iffy, the medical knowledge was next to nil and thank goodness for the wodent wheel. With more owners becomeing more aware of the needs of gliders, it is very ossible these figures can be reached. Necropsys are of vital importance, so we can see what it is we need to watch for. In your case you are assuming it is old age. could it be something else? We won't know. They have only been here in the states 10-12 years, so really what judges do we have to go on. In australia, their native land they have been known to live in captivity 12-15 years. I myself am prepared for that time.

I am very sorry to hear of the death of your glider. It would be a good idea ot get a necropsy done so that you know what happened.
