How well do sugar gliders do with natural Christmas trees? I know it's early, but my daughters are concerned. Do I need to get an artificial tree this year? Sorry to post this before Thanksgiving...

well i looked around on line and unfortunatly pine trees are said to have a toxit effect in animals. the site i went to (the wellness center) said that they are not 100% sure that it is toxic but to some animals it has had a toxic effect, so my advice ither go with plastic or put your tree in a room that the gliders cant go into just for the hoidays.

As a general rule, you should stay away from any and all "sappy" trees.
Unfortunately, I cannot think of any Christmas tree that would not fall into this category ... with the exception of the artificial ones, of course.
I just came in to post everyone to be cautious of the Christmas tree hazards to gliders when I saw yours.
It is also quite possible that even with the artificial trees, your glider/gliders may chew the light cords ... this would pose an electrical hazard.
I know it would be so much fun to watch your glider/gliders play in the Christmas tree. What wonderful pictures you could get ... BUT if you want pics of your glider's Christmas fun, then let them play in the artificial tree BEFORE any decorations are put on it.

I bought my gliders a fake Christmas tree of their very own! It is about 1-2 feet tall and I hung curly ribbon all over it. THey love it. It is their year round tree.

Hi - I do not currently own a SG, but am in the researching phase.
I do own a Siberian Dwarf hamster, and from going to many hamster sites I've read that most "aromatic" woods (i.e. pine/cedar/aspen) contain a substance called Phenol. This is what makes the strong odor/some of the cleaning properties of the cleaner PineSol. Long term exposure causes organ/renal problems.
I sure wouldn't risk it. I think KarenE has the right idea - let them play on a nice safe artificial tree before it's decorated.

I would think its not a good idea to aloow them around a real tree..because of the toxic factor...also they could drown if they get into the bucket of water the tree is keept in. However a fake tree would be a lot of fun for gliders!! I may get one!!
