Hi! I have good news, we finally found a sugar glider for me! I'm so excited. I get her sometime this week. I have a ton of questions to ask though. First of all, is there any tips that you guys have for a person getting their first glider? Any tips on how to get her to feel comfortable around me? And my major question is when she gets warmed up to me... Do you think it would be okay to take her to high school with me? Thanks a ton.. I'm sure I'll have more quetions.... Wends

I wouldn't take her to high school. I am in college and take them with me every day. However, in high school they are a little more strict about things. The main thing in high school is that teachers are concerned about distractions. A sugar glider is definately a distraction. A bonded glider will USUALLY stay in your shirt and be quiet but there is always a risk that they may make a noise or come out of your shirt. I wouldn't risk detention or suspension. In college teachers really don't care. They don't care how you dress or if you even come to class. It is a more relaxed environment.

Here is a great page to go to that helps with bonding:<a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/bonding.html>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/bonding.html</a>

Here is an index that lists lots of helpful resources:<a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/index.html>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/index.html</a>

I on the other hand reccomend it only when your glider is shirt or bra trained, or if you have a pouch that you can keep in your shirt all day. I'm a senior in high school and my little Sydney comes with me all the time, sometimes I even let her out to play but thats only in classes where the teacher already knows she is there and doesn't care. More than likeley it will turn out to be a very good bonding opportunity, oh and I forgot, do you drive to school? this is important in case something happens and you have to get your glider home or something. If not, is there someone who could take you and your glider somewhere if there was an emergency?

i think it really depends on your school! you should ask your teachers, i bring mine to school, but i am at art school and it is a VERY open minded place.i also didnt start bringing them until i could go a whole day without them crabbing ( so they dont do it in class) feel out the situatoin, i tihnk it is different for everyone. also i recomend carrying them around your house for a while first so you can also see what they like. If you do i definitally would make sure you have a pouch that they cant get out of..last thing you need is to lose one at school
good luck wink

Oh, and dagney... my school is very very small.. it only has around 250 students... my teachers are very nice and almost like my good friends... i don't think that they would mind... but i'm only concerned about my glider and her health... and lauren.. i forgot to add that i do not drive yet, but i'm sure one of my teachers would take me home if i needed to..

This is a forum for discussion. Placements of messages wanting sugar gliders or selling sugar gliders will be deleted. I just tuck my gliders in my shirt. They learn to hang on to your shirt or bra. They hang on during the day and just go to sleep. When it gets dark out, they wake up and start to investigate. You can also make a pouch to tuck into your shirt or purchase one of those security pouches (in the luggage section), but be sure to get a cotton one. My animals are SMART: They can and DO open zippers again and again and again, so until they go to sleep, I keep my eye on them.

Most high schools have a policy on bringing live animals to school....if they aren't caged you can get expelled. You need to find out your school policy. Also you need to know your state laws. Almost every single state has a law that says if your animal bites someone the glider must be taken in to be checked for rabis. They kill the animal in order to do this. Several gliders have had this happen to them now. Do not let anyone at the school pet your glider.....you can be sued by their parents if they are bitten and the state has the right to kill your glider even if the school doesn't press charges.

I do know that there are laws... But at my school it's extremely relaxed... Everyone treats everyone like family... They would not expell me or sue me by any chance.. I do thank you very much though for bringing it up... If I do take my glider to school I'll take a traveling cage for her and I will not let anyone touch her... Thanks again! Love, Wends

Oh hell yea, take it with you whereever you go. That's one good way of bonding with it.

You shouldnt take her to high school with you because if she get scarred then she will jump arround. Also with the bonding when she is asleep you should put her in a shirt with a pocket near your heart so she will get used to her alot easier. raspberry smile frown wink
