Roy I see you have done some homework before getting your glider, you are right the catfood, and nuts are not a grand thing as far as a diet. at one time, those things were acceptable and preferred, in fact there are still many reputable breeders that are still feeding them to their gliders. However seeing that gliders are fairly new to the states, more and more research is being done with them. I would have to go with my conscience here. But If it were me I would feed either one. As far as the oranges, it isn't a problem, some gliders eat them, some don't. Mine just started eating them, and then they only suck the juice from the pulp and throw the rest away. They don't eat much of it either. As far as the smell, well they will at first smell like a skunk, that is their defensive smell, then they will mark their territory and that will be a musky smell. the less you clean his cage here at the begining the better off you are, just let it air out. If you try to clean it he will only mark it again. Mind you , you do have to clean it, just not right now. Also you need to leave him in the cage for about 3 days, he needs to learn his surroundings, smells and get used to the activity in his area. in the meantime try to protect him from any strange, smells, people, and sounds that may startle him, including the cat. He isn't being territorial because of the cat, but he may hate the smell of the cat on you. Give him time to get used to you, give him lots of treats.. Love him like you have never loved anything before. He will return that love 12 fold.. here is the link for my web page, read the section on bonding and trust..
