You can't really "get the word out" other than through advice to potential buyers that ask you or this site etc. for advice. But if someone does get a store bought one and is having trouble, it's sure nice to know this place exists, it's been helpful to so many, including myself. Mine came from a wonderful breeder who decided to sell some to a pet store. They sat there for over a month the poor babies. I know I have my work cut out for me, but I won't give up, and yes, they are coming around, slowly. I'm learning tricks and getting suggestions, and learning as I go along. For example - if anyone has a chronic biter, like myself - try this, it's working for me...to pick them up I use cotton gloves - thin and soft enough so they smell my scent and it feels ok to them, but just enough protection to give me confidence and the bites don't penetrate through my skin too easy. Also, the breeder said they love maple syrup, I was trying honey and yougourt. Got the maple syrup, spread it on my finger and several times during the pouch time or play time, I offer it. Now I notice instead of going right to bite me, they are licking me, anticipating a good thing.
Larry, you can't stop Sugar Gliders from being sold and bought in pet stores, but you can educate people. Personally, I felt like I was recueing my S'gliders from the pet store and I'm glad I got them, I have the patience and love for the job. I do want another female someday and will definately get it from a breeder. I will be curious to see the difference. Thanks everyone for being there for me and for one another, this glider gossip is fun and informative and supportive. Susan
: You know, i noticed that most of the complaints about biting gliders, nay, unfriendly gliders, come from those who purchase from pet shops. How do we get the word out to buy from breeders? I have had people visit me and my gliders and after the visit, never buy from a pet shop, but will wait until I have some little ones. I recommend that anyone interested visit a BREEDER rather than a PET SHOP. Let's get the word out!
