Last Summer, two young ringtail possums..Ocsar and Molly joined our family.

Molly developed baby bumps in her pouch at the end of Winter. Not very big and I thought she would take a little while before a joey appeared.
I was surprised in mid Sept that I saw this very mature nose poking out, the first time the baby had appeared at all

Then six days later it came out of pouch during the day for a little while and then back into the pouch for the rest of the day . It was a little girl and it's eyes were open and quite alert! It's fur was still quite slick and not fluffy.

It continued to pop out of the pouch during the day but at night stayed safely in mum's pouch. I marvelled at how one baby that size could hide away in it's mother's pouch. Several times I thought she had lost the joey. A few days later I checked the joey and noticed it had grown extra bits..it was a boy. I checked the nest and there was only one so I must have been mistaken with my initial gender check. Several days later though, Molly revealed she had two joeys all along when I found both out at the same time! My eyes had not been deceiving me but Molly is not a big possum and how she managed to keep two joeys of that size in her pouch showing only a small bulge amazes me.

Only two weeks after the first signs of a baby nose in pouch, here they are all fluffed up and big. They even come out of the nestbox on their own and explore the aviary!
:-

Baby boy is not bigger than the girl yet..he just decided to move forward when I took the photo!

They are totally amazing. The little boy was riding on Molly's back last night and the other joey was sitting alone on a ledge in the aviary. Suddenly it ran up the wire, across some branches, up some more wire, right across the aviary and hopped back into the nestbox on it's own! That's a long way for a little girl that three weeks ago wasn't even OOP!
