LaFeil Starting Member 3 Posts Could you possibly find something out for Virginia for me, I know they sell some here but then again the laws are unknown, and Virginia has the tendency to change their laws as fast as those changing the laws can change their underwear. Also can you find some places for me to find gliders like where I can by them? LaFeil Starting Member 3 Posts Thanks, I was lookin at the first site you gave me. They seem like they handle things really well with their gliders. I am looking into gliders researching and stuff before i get one. There was one place that sold gliders near me, they get them from a breeder, and it seems that those gliders have been a bit aggresive lately from what i hear from people who have gone to look into them. But thanks for the info. quote: Originally posted by kyro298
Are you sure about Massachusetts?
Yes this is true. If Lissa and I were to go to P town we couldnt take them with us if we were staying more than 24 hours. Flutter Super Glider 205 Posts kyro298 Glider Sprinkles CO, USA 15262 Posts totallywyld Joey 18 Posts I have not been around in awhile and I wanted to add some info to this. I was doing some research for someone. Sugar Gliders are Legal in Georgia (as of 2008) This is off the Georgia DNR state website. georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga....nt=6&txtPage=3
Sugar gliders are legal as pets if the owner possesses valid documentation that the animal originated from a source inspected and regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture. As for Pennsylvania, there is nothing in the laws saying Sugar Gliders (Petaurus breviceps)are illegal. I even searched for the subspecies. They list several "families" of spieces and still nothing directing me to Sugar Gliders. I am starting to wonder if people are confusing the Sugar Glider with the Nothern Flying Squirrel which is listed as an endangered species in PA. All the supposed info on the web is old and conflicting and provides no acutual proof. I was told by the Game Commission I can own them as long as they are captive bred. Until someone can show me something written in the law that specifically says Sugar Gliders. And not unoffical websites, I will keep the name of the man and woman I spoke with in regards to them. ( I have also heard conflicting stories about it depends on who you speak with) But no one is actually able to provide concrete written proof of where they are getting their info from that is not just some random website. Some websites are also only posting a portion of the law. ( I can't find that site now. ) The law says unless provided in this section it is unlawful for a person to possess, import, trade, sell, offer for sale, release the follwing wild animals. It lists the animals and the family of animals that are unlawful that require permits. Skunks, raccoons, foxes, wolf's etc. The Sugar Glider family is not listed. I even read through housing laws for keeping animals that require permits and such. That was almost 100 pages of A LOT OF ANIMALS. From Bears to Racoons, Hippo's etc. Still no mention of Sugar Gliders. ( I found hedgehogs which people say are illelal and require a permit, so I found proof of that one) But I can not find anything that offically says Suggies are illegal and require a permit. I know there is a thread about a woman in PA that attempted to buy food for her suggie and was told she had to get rid of it. I have been in several PetSmarts and other stores in PA that sell Sugar Glider food. Everything I found is in many different sections www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/site/default.asp?pgcNav=|
kyro298 Glider Sprinkles CO, USA 15262 Posts Yes, Georgia passed that after this thread was made. As far as PA, what about this from that site: "Sec. 2963. Exotic wildlife possession permits. (a) Authorization. - The commission may issue permits to persons to possess exotic wildlife which shall authorize the holder to purchase, receive or possess exotic wildlife from any lawful source from within or without this Commonwealth. (b) Shelter, care and protection. - No permit provided for in this section shall be granted until the commission is satisfied that the provisions for housing and caring for such exotic wildlife and for protecting the public are proper and adequate and in accordance with the standards established by the commission. (c) Unlawful acts. - It is unlawful for any person to: (1) Possess, purchase or receive exotic wildlife, without first securing a permit to possess exotic wildlife issued under this section or regulations pertaining to this section. (2) Release exotic wildlife into the wild. (3) Fail to exercise due care in safeguarding the public from attack by exotic wildlife. (4) Recklessly engage in conduct which places or may place another person in danger of attack by exotic wildlife. (d) Penalty. - (1) A violation of this section relating to permits is a summary offense of the third degree. (2) Any other violation of this section is a summary offense of the fifth degree. (3) Each day of violation shall constitute a separate offense, but under no circumstances shall the accumulated penalty for purposes of a field receipt exceed $300. There shall be no limit on any accumulated penalty a court may assess. (e) Discretion of director. - In addition to the penalties provided, the director may, for any violation of this section, revoke or suspend any permit and order the disposal of any exotic wildlife held. Cross References. Section 2963 is referred to in section 2965 of this title." Is a sugar glider covered under "exotic wildlife"? totallywyld Joey 18 Posts quote: Originally posted by kyro298

I know this thread was started after Georgia changed the law. I simply added the UPDATE! No need to start a new thread IMO. SO excuse me for wanting to update people on changes and sharing what I have researched. As I stated if you read more. IT LISTS ALL THE ANIMALS. What you posted keeps getting posted over and over on many sites but they are not showing the lists of animals. Why do people keep insisting on posting only a PORTION of the law. That is not everything the law states but a portion of what websites choose to post. They never post the part of the law that starts with " unless provided in this section it is unlawful for a person to possess, import, trade, sell, offer for sale, release the follwing " It is a HUGE list. I found the LIST and it does not INCLUDE Sugar Gliders. I found all housing requirements for keeping exotic animals. Sugar Gliders are not on that list either. But Hedgehogs are which people also say are illegal which they are without a permit. No where in the law does it say Sugar Gliders are illegal and that you have to have permit. I was told by not one but TWO game commission officers. I can have them. I am not gonna post everything I found it is a great deal of information over 100 pages in PDF format. I provided the links if people want to research it themselves. And also contact the game commission. As for a vet. There is a vet in my area that takes care of my suggies, not to many that take care of exotics or small critters. He too has said he heard people say such things but has several clients with Suggies in PA. If they are illegal I am sure he would have reported all of us by now. A vet can not legally take a pet from someone who can only report to the proper authorties. I am not gonna stick around to argue about it. But just came along to share what I was told and have read for hours. I do rescue work and the dog warden has been in my home due to state laws of inspections for kennel license and such. So in reality it just may depend on who you talk too and how you want to interrupt things. I have lived in PA all my life I think I will stick with the information I have read and interrupted along with the info that I recieved right out of the Game Commissions mouth. mlaaron Starting Member 2 Posts quote: Originally posted by Flutter
Current States and Areas Known to be illegal: Alaska California Georgia Hawaii Massachusetts Pennsylvania (PA is not issuing or renewing required permits to own sugar gliders. PA law REQUIRES permits to own a sugar glider legally. Without a permit you may NOT own a sugar glider in the state, therefore ALL sugar gliders are illegal inside the state.)
Michigan is known to be legal: upgrayedd.webs.com/?blogentryid=4507403
With kind regards, ~Michéle Aaron gray_Fox_forever Super Glider USA 352 Posts Actually to add my two sense in here.... I have relatives that live in pa.... (brother and sister) Recently i flew up there to visit as our Grandmother is in the hospital after our grandfather was taken to ER with chest pains........ While we were there yapping and catching up, he was asking me how the gliders were doing and so on. I told him that if he was really serious on getting some to find a breeder........He then stated they were illegal in PA and i heard it was but never had proof. I even did what the above people have mentioned and found nothing that stated that Sugar Gliders are illegal to own as pets....HOWEVER, Since i was already in pa for a few days, i gave the HEad honchos a call.....I forget what the number it was now, since i used their house phone, but if i can get it again, ill post it here for all to see :) But i called the game comission up( at least i think it was them...), got transfered like 300 freaking times, go figure, and finally got ahold of a very snappy lady who was willing to talk and answer my questions. I asked her about the website and hhow it was confusing on how they listed items on there, especially the animals that were "illegal". And she said that at that point in time, the laws on some of the animals were chaning too fast or there was too many to keep it 100% current and updated..... So i asked her if it was illegal to own a Sugar Glider as a pet, and she immedialty said, without hesitation, YES Sugar Gliders are in fact illegal to own in PA. I then quized her on the differences between the gray flying squirrel and the Sugar gliders and she was very defensive lol....... Guess i was questioning her intelligence LOL....never.......*evil Grin* So after that battle, it was not at all being confused with the gray flying squirrell and that Sugar Gliders are in Fact illegal in the state of pa. And what someone posted above about the Permits and renewing them, is in fact true. Those permits used to be the only way Sugar Gliders were Legal in the state of Pennsylvania but since they are no longer doing those permits, that means no renewels and all pets with those permits are in fact illegal.....which is gay in my oponion. Out of all honesty though, i know a person that does own sugar gliders (recently moved there from New York, where they are legal there) who has a set of gliders, that are registered with the FDA and all that legal hogwash, and yet have anything to do with getting their gliders taken away...... I think they have more issues right now dealing with people getting alligators or crocidiles lol...... So to answer the undieing question about gliders in Pennsylvania....ILLEGAL..... Honestly now, here is my piece on this and i do apalogize if i offend anyone by my statements below as it is not my intention to do so...... Just saying that incase i do...... What the hell is the big deal with owning a foreign pet like a Sugar Glider as long as you have the state informed and have a legal based way on keeping track of people with those pets and have some kind of documenation that states you know how to handle, breed, or take care of that animals? Sugar Gliders are not a native animal, yes, but that animal, especially in a state like pennsylvania which has continious climate changes and SNOW, would not live because the climate is not what the gliders need to live..... So whats the big deal? I dont understand it. Its just like the new stupid law they are trying to get passed about any animal that is not native to make it illegal......I have a 125 gallon, 6 foot long aquarium filled with very pricey tropical fish. Now if i lived in pennsylvania, or any state that that law will go for if passed, i would be in possession of an illegal "pet". Now tell me this, where in the united states, besides maybe like california or florida, could like Freshwater Angelfish and other tropical fish, live year round and not die off??? No where in my knowledge.... I just think its gay.... Sorry for my ranting lol....... sweet_thing Starting Member 2 Posts If you live in PA, I urge you to write to your local PA state representative. I called a few days ago and was told, they are illegal but had no reason why that hadn't been legalized other than a state rep needed to present the bill and have it passed, but none had yet picked it up and done so. I live in PA, and I'd love to be able to get a pair of sugar gliders as pets for my family, where due to allergies we'd not be able to have anything else but a lizard or turtle that you tap through glass to see. Check out my posting on this board or my blog at: passiton.today.com/2009/08/12/help-legalize-sugar-gliders-in-pennyslvania/
If your in PA help us by writing to your local representative and Senator. Georgia legalized them last year, I think it's Pennsylvania's turn now.
