If you've been following the "David" thread in General Chat then you know that a bunch of you (apparently enough to make up a small nation) donated to buy him some flowers while he was in the hospital. But unless you consider an entire greenhouse of flora "some flowers" then it was too much so Kazko was straddled with the task of finding interesting ways to gift it. This new cage for my colony was the climax!

I've been working on it for at least six hours (and the frame was already put together two days ago). It was pretty labor-intensive and I move slooooowwwwwllllly. Here's the end result:

Again - I just can't thank you all enough.
I'm sure my crew will have a blast!!

Whadaya think?

I realize that the wood will soak up urine and smell - but logs are pretty darned abundant in my neck of the woods. The cabin is placed high so that it will be less likely to get "fallout" *I'm hoping*; but I'll still have to do the vinegar/water treatment frequently. I just could resist it, and can't wait to see them play in it.

Thanks!

The shelf across the back is a board with fleece attached at the back with clothespins that they can't get to. I screwed on some strap hangers so that I can hang toys from the underside. If it gets too stinky eventually I'll go with a wire shelf instead. The orange shelf holding the glider kitchen is a Closet Maid that I sewed a few different fleece covers for to cut down even more on food flingage.

It looks BEAUTIFUL!

Those gliders are SO lucky!

I love the innovative and practical ways you have to try to reduce the mess. They all look so great in the cage - make "the look" - and hopefully will make it easier for you!

Oh wow!! I love it! But let me ask, how do you keep all that wood in there without it soaking up urine qand eventually smelling terrible? When I firt got my big cage I had a few wooden things and they haven't been in the cage since the 5th or 6 th day. So let me in on how you do it?

It does soak up urine and I don't recommend it. Since I live in a forest, I can replace the logs anytime I like - and I only use oak which is very dense. Between replacing I spray and rinse with a vinegar and water solution. Even that won't neutralize it forever though. You just have to accept that wooden items will eventually be throwaways. The cabin setup was only $12 so I won't feel too awful when it has achieved intolerable "ripeness".

Thank you!!

I think that most cages are just ugly by definition. There are ways to make them work with your decor instead of against it. The trick is to make it look warm instead of looking like a cold prison for confined animals. Softening the hard lines of the exterior with vines is a good place to start.

This cage is so wonderful guys. Love, love, love the huge doors. It's so easy now to get logs and wheels in and out. AND no more guillotines!
