Hey everybody,

The otherday my brother took in a sugar glider from my cousin's work friend. It was $100 for the sugar glider and cage. Her name is Sweet Cheeks and she is 2 years old....

Well questions begin:

We purchased a much larger cage for her yesterday as she was in a filty house shape bird cage...probably a 12inches by 10 inches by 18 inches(House shape so it lost width as it got higher)...she looked miserable. Her cage now is a 28 x 18 x 31 (LxWxH). I just wanted to ask since my brother doesnt have an account on mfk, if you guys can post pictures of your cages. This will help us provide better living conditions this cage was intended for rats so thier are large steps and such...I figured more room could be given with sugarglider sized objects. Any sites where we can order sugar glider items? And tips will be appreciated, we have read this diet off of a site called BML diet which we will make today as well as purchase grubs like meal worms.

Thanks A Million, and please don't flame...my brother seemed to have done his research and I did repeatedly tell him not to purchase her since I believed it would be too difficult...however after seeing the conditions she was in...my brother will do anything to make her feel more comfortable.

Some general ideas I have for the cage:

-New Hammock
-Branches instead of parakket perches as what was provided by the owner...(however any sites where I can purchase branches also what should thickness be)
-Wheel as it used one however it is in bad shape and needs to be changed
-Food/water bowl will be kept high as I figure they prefer being high up
-Wooden toys to munch on (any ideas where to purchase)
-Meal Worm Dish

Found a bunch of these stuff on sugarglidersuperstore any other recommended sites?

-Also i read somewhere that sugar gliders should be kept solitary should have a companion...however this one has been alone for 2 years will thier be aggressive behaviors? Also I'm not sure if this cage would be comfortable..

Any other ideas? Especially looking for a trusted site for my brother to purchase all items..

Thanks again for all your feedback!

Do you think you could post pics of your cage for us to see? I will leave the cage suggestions to others because we built a PVC cage (which you could also do if you like :) but I will let them give you some options too).

Wheels I would suggest the Raptor:
http://www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/index.asp?RaptorWheel

For cage sets I would suggest viciousencounters. She is a member on this site and makes amazing glider safe cage sets. She has a really cute pink and brown set on her etsy store right now. :) I ordered my set from her and I absolutely love it and so does my baby.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/viciousencounters?ref=shop_sugg

Here is a list of vendors that many of us have used. You will have to look through them, there are so many options!
http://www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/index.asp?Vendors

It sounds like you guys are doing a great job so far to give her a better home. Just keep asking questions if you need to, we are here to help!

-Wooden toys to munch on (any ideas where to purchase) It's not good for them to chew on wooden toys. You can make your own ball pit with a bucket or plastic basket and add plastic balls, barrel monkeys, and other things. Mine will carry toys to their pouch with their tails.
-Meal Worm Dish They don't necessarily need a meal worm dish, since they are used as treats. Mine get around 6 each a day. They are fattening.

Thanks a lot for your post, and for your recognition of ideas on cage. Those pics are amazing, my bro probably won't be able to top it now...but eventually will! Ok so I just removed the wood toy, best toys are plastic and fabrics I assume? That is no problem!

Thanks for telling me about the food dish not being needed...saving money always helps lol

Here was the order I placed for my brother, pretty sure it would be a good start.

2 Lg Manzanitta Branch Large
No Mess Feeding Station
Mealworm Storage container
Mealworm Keeper / Bedding mealworm-keeper--bedding-1-lb
Live Mealworms 1000 pack live-mealworms-1000-
Sandy Trimmer Wheel 8 sandy-trimmer-wheel-8-iinch / Includes SandyInsert
Premium Sugar Glider Diet premium-sugar-glider-diet-3-l 3 lb.
Carry / Bonding Pouch
with Window / Blue
Eucalyptus Sticks (2
Pack)
Rep-Cal with D-3 repcal-with-d
The Hammock / Pouch
Mealworm Chow 16 oz.

Examples found on Google. You can find a lot more if you google 'sugar glider ball pit' in 'images'. Mine have a ball pit that is made up of plastic party favor characters and jingle balls. They make sure to have all of the snakes in their pouch before going to bed

I love it and it was really inexpensive. It was kind of a pain to put together by myself though. So I recomend you help your friend build it. It came in a flat box.

An 8 inch wheel is usually too small for gliders. Gliders do not run in a wheel - they leap. Most good glider safe wheels are 12 inches - this is a Stealth Wheel

The premium sugar glider diet will not provide for all of your gliders' nutritional needs. Most pellet type foods are OK in small amounts as snacks and to help keep their teeth clean, but gliders need a better balanced diet to meet their protein, vitamin and calcium needs.

They also need fruits and vegetables daily with any good balanced staple recipe.

I have links on my web page to web pages for the feeding plans that most of us use for our gliders. Look them over and choose one that you would like to make for your gliders.

I think OP mentioned making BML, even so, pellets are still not necessarily fed daily. If you already bought some, you don't have to throw them out. You may have them for a long while for snacks or emergencies. Mine are on BML and love it. It has the consistency of ice cream.

GliderLove94 - the cage you asked about - the economy type cage has several draw backs. The size is its best feature.

It is a flimsy cage and will rattle with every glider jump or turn of the running wheel.

The doors are too small to all you to put a full size glider wheel into and out of the cage. You need to partially take the cage apart to do so.

It does not have a removable bottom grate so your frequent cleanings of the food and debris that lands there rather than falling to the cage pan must be done by hand reaching through the slide up door that does not stay open.

Gliders can and will open slide up doors - you will need to secure not only the feeder doors but also the larger doors when you open and close the cage. The large slide up doors on this cage do not come with any type of lock.

When looking for a glider cage, my list of must haves include:

A sturdy cage with a metal frame around each side panel.
Large swing out doors for easy cleaning, decorating and interacting with your gliders.
Removable bottom grate and cage pan - these require cleaning more than any other part of the cage.
Secure cage door locks on the large doors. You will need to add some way to secure small feeder doors on any cage.
Large size cage to fit your space, but a manageable size if you plan to take it out side for cleaning. Measure doorways and make sure cage will fit through the door if you locate it in an interior room.

As far as their food I created them a dinning room at the bottom. All of the food stays in there so there is no mess. There is a link to modify the door so it swings open and not slides. I put a tie wraps on all of the doors not being used and I fit a full size wheel at an angle just fine its a little snug but not hard to get in and out. Also for the doors that are being used I bought some Velcro straps that I use to lock them so the gliders are not able to get out. Also when I put it together I squeezed with channel locks the cage bars that connect together so that it will not be flimsy. It is pretty sturdy for gliders and the noise from the wheels and gliders chattering to each other are louder than any noise that the cage makes from movement. For the price and size I am willing to make the few tiny modifications.=] Well worth it to me.

Thanks. I was looking at something similar here http://www.logcabindoghouse.com/shop/shop.php?i=B000GR7DCK . She wants a cage like mine or a one of the other sturdy ones, but the problem is with the Visa Gift Cards. I got her a $100 and $25 to get a cage. On Ebay, it will only use one card per purchase, so it says it's invalid. It's been difficult finding a site that will accept 2 cards for 1 item.

Pictures are always deceiving. Mine looks like a piece of in pictures, but is great when you see it in person. We had a problem with the starter cage. It seemed really sturdy, but did not have a frame and dented easily. Another starter cage she got, the bars broke completely off. Anyways, I told her I would help take responsibility for them until she got the hang of it, since they were in bad conditions and she agreed to adopt them from the people since I couldn't.

GliderLove94 - the link you posted is the same type of economy cage. I had one and the slide up doors and lack of a removable bottom grate were a major pain in the neck when it comes to cleaning the cage. I was replacing it within 6 months. It was also beginning to show rust where the paint had begun to chip.

I first purchased a cage that was too small. Then I bought the inexpensive cage that did not last long. I then got the sturdy cage I have now had for 3 years. The first two were a waste of my money and together the cost about the same as the cage I now use.

Hopefully she can find a better way to pay for a cage. The gift cards would be great as a vet fund to get the gliders their well check ups or in case of an emergency.

Thanks everyone for all your input!
Thanks for everyone who had post pics of thier cages and toys to give us better understnading of thier captive habitat.
I will check the link posted now.
Also anyone know how to contact the admin? It keeps telling me to ""tell the admin" about the fact that the pics wont upload.

Thanks Again, alo anyone have any ideas on how to properly hold a sugar glider? I usually open the cage, place my hand on the cage, she climbs on me and runs all over me...pants, back, in shirt all over the place! I don't really mind it except when she end up in my shirt yesterday tearing up my back with her nais

However thats not her fault as I should have been wearing a more appropiate shirt like a sweater for the first few weeks of trying o bond. Also she has a habit of nipping when being touched while she is on me, any ideas?

Also how do bonding pouches work? I purchased one because it was mentioned, woudn't they constantly run out of it?

Thanks Everyone!

They don't really like to be held long unless they are sleepy. They are full of energy, especially at night. In the mornings, I hold them against me (They are tired by this time) and give them mealies. They will stay still long enough to eat them and that's it. After they have had a few each, they go to sleep in their tunnel. If she bites you, you can make a loud TSSSSST or PSSSSST sound. She should eventually stop if you do this overtime.

Bonding pouches are for the day time. You can wear them around the house while they are asleep. It helps the bonding process, that and treats.
