Stability of homemade pvc cages?

I've been looking at making a pvc cage but I am worried about the stability of the plastic mesh siding. I already had a scare with my girlies escaping from an old cage that had a bar pop off. I had to buy another cage and ended up with a cage half the size but put together much better. They seem to get along alright in a smaller cage but they just don't have the room anymore.

Have you had any experiences with homemade cage failures? Are there alternatives to a plastic mesh? If the pvc isn't glued together have you had issues with it falling apart?

The plastic mesh is pretty thick. If you have gliders that chew through stuff, it might not be the best for you. I have made 2 pvc cages and I love them. I put the mesh on with zip ties, but used stainless steel screws in all the corners and stuff. These babies and not coming apart unless my gliders figure out how to unscrew things...

I love how light weight they are. When it's time to take them outside to hose off, I can easily lift and carry them and don't have to worry about any rust. As with any type of cage, some people love them, some hate them. I wanted the biggest cage I could afford with large doors so I could reach all parts of the cage. I looked for a long time online and couldn't find a single cage (affordable or not) that had all the features I wanted. Building one turned out the be the best decision I made.

Hope you find what works for you.

My girls nibble on things. I'm kind of worried they would nibble in the same area for a while and I wouldn't catch that there was a hole before it was too late.

Do you think hanging a piece of mesh in the cage and seeing how they treat it would be a good indicator of how well it can hold them?

ya know, I have chewers, but not hard core chewers... they have been in pvc with plastic mesh for quite a while and no problems. Course my cage is pretty solid
