For educational purposes, here are a few photos of sugar glider genitalia. You will commonly come across this in sugars over 6 months old as they awake, when they are marking, when they are in heat and when they are fighting. This is normal.

It can extend out of the cloaca area and you can plainly see the remaining cloaca where the pee and poo comes from.





And here is the best I have been able to capture a full state in action. What you see is the base which is a sheath that surrounds the two shafts.

Keep in mind that the female does have two genitalia which matches the male bifurcated genitalia.

Hate to tell you - they look the same after neutering. And they still do the same thing! (at least one of my boys does!) Just shooting blanks, thank God!

I have seen mine like that... Ever. I have 2 boys & the most I've seen is a "cherry stem"

This guy is neutered. All of my guys are neutered, now. Has no effect on their "hanging out". This guy in the top two photos was neutered way too early by the breeder due to his genetic condition and it has stunted his growth. I havent yet caught Buddy mating with Pican now that hes neutered.

My sugar family is very trusting of me. I was able to grab them out of the cage and hold them while they were latched together and mating. I did get some very dark and low quality video with my still camera which I may have to take a look at again to see if there is anything useful. The thrusts are very deep and are basically as far as he can manage to move. He would do three thrusts then pause for a time and repeat. This would last a great deal of time into the night.

Another interesting thing to note is that Buddy has been neutered since 3/26 and Pican appears to be "with pouch" again. Looks like two. It is safe to say that she has either stored some sperm or fertilized eggs or that the removal of testicles took awhile to have the desired effect...

Fun stuff!

They are not easily deterred if you happen to interrupt them when they are mating. Kazko, after you took that last picture, they kept right on going I bet...

The video was captured using my Sony still camera which can capture 15 sec video segments but it isnt a video camera and it is pretty bad quality. It was also dark in there, so I had to gamma correct everything, so it looks crummy. The stills have the flash and are high quality so they look really good compared to this video.

Going through old posts and found this one interesting. We talked to a girl at Petco just before we got our two gliders and she said she once had a male and she experienced the same thing. She thought it was a string and called the vet. The vet told her to gently pull it out. She wasn't able to, obviously, but then when to an online chat and was told it was his genitalia! She felt so bad about it, wondering if she had hurt him, but then became grossed out knowing she was handling him that way...LOL. I guess that's why it's important to find a vet who has a knowledge of sugar gliders! Another lesson learned.

What really gets me now is the suggie testicle sac. They hang on tendons that the animal can apparently control. Some times they are in and sometimes they can hang way way way out. After waking from a neuter, the first thing the animal does is grab his sac and basically stretch it over his head so he can groom on it easily. It looks horrible and any male will cringe watching this. I dont let them do this because the pain meds might allow them to start chewing on the thing, id rather they can feel it first before they go to town, so I usually leave them in collars overnight.

They way these animals are sold to unknowing folks at flea markets and events, harping on the genitalia is very important so that people do not repeat accidental tortures to their new pet. The bifurcated male and female genitalia is certainly something for the FAQ.
