hi! well i have a cat that my glider is very friendly with. my cat is an indoor cat but i still give her flea and tick medication as a just in case. i'm about to get a puppy that i would like my glider (gizmo) to be just as friendly with but i'm scared that he may get fleas even tho the pup will have the flea medication. i can't really keep the dog indoors 24/7 like my cat. does anyone know of a way that i can keep gizmo from getting fleas just in case the pup gets them and transfers them before the medication kicks in? i had thought of putting cedar into gizmo's cage but i've been told that cedar isn't good for gliders, but it works well at keeping bugs away. does anyone have any ideas?!?!?! thank you in advance for all of your help!

Gliders can get fleas but I dont think thats the issue.

Did you know cats have a bacteria in their claws that can kill a glider- even with an accidental scratch. I've heard of too many gliders that get killed by cats and dogs.

Please read this discussion http://www.sugarglider.com/glidergossip/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16252

I understand you think your pets get along, but what if the cat or the new puppy accidentally hurt them? I'd never be able to forgive myself if something happened that could be prevented so easily.

I urge you to get your glider another glider buddy to be friends with.

But about the flea thing. I don't know, i've never heard of a glider getting fleas my best advice would be to call up your vet and see what they have to say.

Please read the posted link. I think u will have seconds thoughts on letting your glider mingle with the cat/dog.

Sorry, my only idea is to keep your cat far, far away from your glider. I'm not being sarcastic...that's my honest opinion. It's hard for people to give advice on something that we think could kill a glider.

Great answer Rhea......Keep in mind cats "hunt"...gliders look abit like a mouse...even if the kitty didn't on purpose go after the glider he could as Rhea said accidently hurt or kill it..get it a cagemate...your glider will be happier as they are colony animals and need one of their own kind....to play with when you sleep and to cuddle with when they sleep....

I think every mammal can get fleas if exposed. Fleas don't care what they live on, as long as it has blood. If you don't want your glider to get fleas, don't expose him to them.

Actually, I've read that there are a few mammals that can't get fleas because their fur is just too dense. (i.e. chinchillas). Interesting to me that PPP says that this is the case with gliders, although we have been assured by our Aussie members that they do, in fact, get fleas.

So, what do you do it they do get fleas-I have two dogs and a cat and treat them every month-haven't had fleas in years, but just incase, what would you do. I would think they could become anemic rather quickly if they have fleas.

Buffie, the only advice we can give is tell you to go to a vet.

That really is a medical question for a vet. Gliders are so tiny, we certainly wouldnt want to tell you to do something that would harm them further.

Sugar Gliders can get fleas. You can buy a flea comb with very fine teeth on it and this would be what I would try first or remove any fleas by hand. Only because anything else they use is quite toxic. Cat's carry bacteria leathal to Sugar Gliders in there teeth and there nails have cat feaces in them so agian cause infections. I have seen way too many animals having to be euthanized because of cat attacks. Everyone wants to believe that their dog or cat would never hurt another animal but this just isn't the case. No matter how casually your other animals react to your gliders, never leave them alone in a room together!

Cedar shavings can cause respitory problems. If you can get your hands on some eucalyptus leaves these are a great in the nest with them but bugs in the nest is just like breakfast in bed.

I use dried eucalyptus leaves in the bottom of the trays and then put the newspaper over the crumbed leaves.

Your pets will love 'em for...#8232;
- Chewing (anti-bacterial, color-brightening, feather-enhancing, sap-loving)#8232;
- Health (anti-oxidant, important vitamin source)#8232;
- Bedding (soft, fragrant, anti-tics, anti-fleas and anti-mites)

You will love 'em for...#8232;
- Aroma (they smell wonderful!)"They smelled great!" - carrie in
california#8232;
- Cleanliness (they actually keep fleas away!)#8232;
- Food source (they'll help keep your little friends happy and strong)

If you have birds or sugar gliders and have never tried Eucalyptus before, you'll like our Fresh Euc Starter Pack, a variety pack of fresh and dried leaves, chew sticks and bark.

Pyrethrum based flea treatment can be used on marsupials but caution must still be taken, Fleas if left untreated can cause anemia.

I would NOT let your cat or dog anywhere near your glider, the risk of injury or death is too great
