Its been awhile since I have posted but I am hoping someone can help. My female glider has red lips. Not the nose but directly underneath. Has anyone ever seen this before? Is this something I should worry about or is it something normal that happens every now and then?
Right below the nose is a really bright pink spot of gums which is probably what you are seeing and no cause for alarm! Here is a picture of the gum "bumps". They aren't as bright in this picture but you can see them clearly
I believe that your female may have a highly infectious version of lazy loveitis and may need cuddle attention immediately! Those lips are for giving kisses!
I had a hard time finding any of my photos that show the bottom 'lips' but here are some:
The bottom jaw on a sugar glider is 100% long teeth in the front. There really is no chin. The 'lips' are a padded, lubricated and tougher area that is engineered to slide over the teeth and not wear. This allows the animal to bear its teeth largely for digging into and removing bark from trees. The 'chin flap' is flexible and can compress and move out of the way so that the animal can really sink those bottom teeth into something. The 'chin flap' can also tear pretty easily but will heal. This is a common wound you see if gliders fight and use their teeth as a weapon.
