Common Questions

What is the Creative Commons license?

There are a few variants of Creative Commons license. The licenses allow content creators such as authors and artists to publish their work and grant the public certain rights to the work while not giving up copyright status. The particular license used for the Gliderpedia content is the Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 License. You can read a summary about it here. You can read more about Creative Commons licenses by vising their website at http://creativecommons.org/license/

Is this license the same as copyright?

Not exactly because a license is different from copyright. You must own or be the originator of any content you publish. The license used here places special restrictions on the content. This is completely different from transferring ownership or copyright to someone else. You are still the copyright holder of any content you publish. This means you can republish your content however you wish. All the protections that copyright law affords someone still holds for you as the copyright holder. See section 7.b in the Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license for more detailed information about your rights as copyright holder. For United States copyright law you can visit http://www.copyright.gov/ for more information.

Can people sell my content?

In short, yes, but only under the restrictions governed by the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 License. If content is used commercially the person publishing the content has to say where the content came from, which is the Attribution portion of the license. The content is also governed by the ShareAlike portion of the license, which means that the content can be freely copied and distributed under the same license. While someone could publish a book with the content in the Gliderpedia, the book, by virtue of the license, will be have to be published under the same Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 License. The book can be freely copied and the content redistributed, so while the content can be sold, the person selling it may not make any money since the book can be freely copied and redistributed by anyone under the same license.

Why not use a Non-commercial variant?

The idea behind the Gliderpedia is to make the content freely available to everyone. While releasing content under a license that allows commercial publication may sound contradictory to that, it is actually the only way to ensure total freedom of the information. By allowing commercial publications, someone can duplicate the Gliderpedia on any of the many free website services on the internet. Such services often place advertisements on any pages that are created, so by default that would violate a non-commercial license. In this manner the options for republishing and distributing the Gliderpedia content are greatly increased.
