Sugar gliders can hiss for a variety of reasons. The most commonly heard one often happens up close and face to face where it seems that the animals hiss to identify themselves. This is usually a friendly gesture like a "hello". If the animals are not familiar with each other or one doesnt like what they hear or smell, this can sometimes be followed by immediate fighting or establishment of dominance.
There are many variations to hissing including
short and fast and
long and slow.
Members of a colony will often hiss at each other during the normal course of events.
If your sugar glider hisses while pooping or peeing, it could be a sign of an infection, inflammation or other kind of abnormal circumstance. It could also simply be constipation which might be alleviate in a few days by adding a drop or two of mineral oil to a hand-fed treat once or twice a day.
If your sugar glider continues to hiss grunt or cry when pooping, it is obviously under stress and need to see a vet as soon as possible.
