Jess just replied to a long-ago message asking about brown gliders. Here's what I know:

Brown gliders are generally wild-caught. From what I have read they are brown because of the dirt that comes from living in the wild, in trees. Sap sticks to their fur and then dirt sticks even more. That's not to say all brown gliders are filthy, just probably stained if they have been captive. The other thing is that even if you breed 2 brown gliders, the babies will still be gray. If you look at Caroline Thompson's "Sugar Glider" care book, there are a number of pictures of brown moms and little gray babies on their backs.

I don't know any of this from experience, just what I've found from various sources.
