His wanting to "make a get away" is probably him just wanting to explore. Let him go and explore but make sure to glider proof first! After he gets used to his surroundings he won't want to explore as much.
As for him crabbing when you wake him up...wouldn't you crab if someone woke you up in the middle of your night? just food for thought.
