Candi, you have been a valuable asset to this page in the past, and I sure would like for you to continue to be one now and in the future. My thoughts regarding the pouches are as follows..
1. you are throwing away all the pouches and converting to nestboxes, the pouches were not really the problem, the accident happened, by not checking the pouch for loose threads, rips, tears and wear. If you were already awar that the pouch was worn, which is why you were changing it, their are other options..
a. having spare pouches to replace them immediatly when a problem is found
b. Polar fleece, isn't durable enough to use as a full time pouch material (Betsycc states that on her website), it would be good for a bonding pouch, but not for a cage pouch.
2. to say that they are not safe is an extreme, for something that could have been prevented. Any injury that has occured with a glider as a result of their pouch, has been due to the wear and tear of a pouch, that should have been removed from the cage when noticed.
MY ADVICE to anyone that uses a pouch is to have extras on hand, I have 3 myself, change them and inspect them each time they are washed, especially after they are dryed, many people make their own pouches, and hasn't tested the durability of the linings. If you happen to have a glider that does tear up their pouch frequently, it could be caused by inadequet material, sewing, or just length of use.
for those that think the pouches are too expensive to have a couple extras on hand, well expense, never should be an option, where the life, safety and well being of your glider is concerned.
Those that have the crown royal bags in their cage, REMOVE them, they are only good for bonding pouches, the string can easily get wrapped around the glider at night while you are sleeping. they are to be inside of a cover shirt or in your hand while the glider is under your direct supervision. There are lots of people on the net that sell pouches, I would suggest buying a few, from someone who has gone through the trial and error process already and have the safety of the gliders, always in mind..
Betsycc is at the link below, Clara also sells pouches, that have been used and tested over time.
