David, I don't believe heat & humidity did your babies in... they relish moist warmth! Have you ruled out the venom of an insect sting? Since they love insects, they would fatefully grab & bite a wasp or bee, & get bitten in the attempt. Hmmmmm?
I don't know where you live or if you have stinging insects, just a thought
