I agree with Jacque about the salt taste. Mine will do the sale thing also. I also have a rat, Nixon, who will do the same thing especially if I have been perspiring a little.
I do think they like the taste of salt, but would not by any means give them additional salt in their diet. I have however put a salt wheel in their cage. They do use it but it will take a VERY LONG time for me to be able to tell it is wearing. I also do not leave it in 24/7.
As for the sleeping/waking, mine will sleep just as late as I will let them. Sometimes as late as 11/11:30 p.m. There seems to be an unwritten glider rule - if my human is asleep I will play as loudly as possible, running all around my cage, jumping from side to side and loud barking.
I think mine like to see how long it will take to get a response. They would love nothing better than to play with you all night.
