Subject: HELP! What's happening to the tail???
Posted by Keith on January 16, 1999 at 00:37:48:
I have three gliders in a large cage who have been together for over a year. In fact they are all kin. One night, at feeding time, one of them looked very sick and was missing a good 2/3 of its' tail. I couldn't imagine one of the other two chewing it off! My first thought was that a large mouse (which I caught in a trap the next day) got hold the tail through the cage. In a couple of days the injured Glider seemed to gain strength and other than having a short tail seemed OK. In a few more days more of the tail was gone and I accepted that maybe one of the others did do it. (They have always fought but I always assumed it was playing.) I separated the sick one and after a few more days it seemed to be okay. It's tail at this time was only about 3/4" to 1" long. It ate well and ran around and played but I kept it quarantined. Tonight at feeding time, it was sick again and the tail is all but gone!. There is no way anything got to it and my only assumption is some type of tail rot. Has anyone heard of such a thing? And what can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Keith
