The male sugar glider has a bifurcated genitalia. It consists of two shafts and is forked at the end like a snake tongue. The genitalia is long and pink, and looks similar to a long worm. If you see this, which you eventually will, Please do not cut it off; your sugar is healthy and normal. See Also: Photos of a sugar glider genitalia

I wonder if the likelihood of neutered boys doing it is different depending on whether they're pom on or off. Since leaving the pom leaves some testosterone and male behaviors intact it seems reasonable that pom on boys would be more likely to floss than fully emasculated ones. I've only had my boys a few weeks now but I've never seen them at it, and their previous owner only recalls seeing the "worms" maybe once from what I recall. I'd imagine age of neutering and whether they reached sexual maturity beforehand also plays a role in this. It'd be interesting to take a poll and see if some factors are correlated with flossing and how strongly. |

The first time I discovered this he was in my bra and I felt something weird on my skin. When I looked, it was hanging out and it stayed out for a few hours. Of course I had to email my vet and tell them about my concerns which went something like this: " my sugar gliders genitalia has been hanging out and I'm afraid he may have genital prolapse. Will it dry out? What should I do? " I'm sure there was an office full of people laughing at me but I was concerned! |

So one day I looked in "her" pouch (around my neck) and I saw this long, pink, forked thing coming out of her. I thought she had a prolapsed rectum or something. So I paniced and called 50 million vets, but no one would see exotic pets in the area. I thought my poor peanut was going to die. Because of this post, I feel much much better about all of this! Man, all of this time 'she' was a 'he'. Thanks for the heads up!

I was at Sea World once and was watching the lone orca swimming around when I excited;y call my son over saying "look she's having a baby!" The education guy looked a bit confused and came over to tell me there was no baby coming out just the baby maker. Good thing I am not a prude case what came out was like size of a Clydesdale and part of the wagon. Glad I didn't see the peepee till after reading about male gliders. First week he was stressed so didn't want to stress him more by trying to figure out if was a girl or boy. First time he fell asleep in my hand still in the bonding pouch he was on his back spread out like a kid in the parent's bed. Was like yup that's a boy, remembered the only joke I ever hear in German and then tried to interpret and totally loses it's funny when translated but it made me giggle seeing am old German lady looking at him sprawled out saying knowingly "Ohh; Eier,Eier,Eier !!!!" |

FigMynt Posted - Dec 12 2014 : 01:53:40 AM
LOL!! I am far from an experienced sugar glider owner. I adopted my first little boy about 9-10 months ago. I did, however, do my research before committing to such a responsibility. If you don't know what you're signing yourself up for, please don't adopt a sugar glider!! This is how they end up in rescues!!!! |
Rosko and Darko Posted - Dec 22 2013 : 09:05:06 AM

Omg, I do remember the first time I ever saw that. I'll admit I was like wtheck is that?!?! There were so many new things to learn in the beginning. Now it's all old hat. 16 + years later they still do things that surprise me from time to time. Such characters. |

I have had mail gliders since '08, & I have yet to see their 'little' genitalia, & I am w/them often. I guess I have very well mannered males, evidently!! |

My 1st 2 gliders, rosco & twinkie were males and the 1st time I saw it, I too thought he was hurt. Before I panicked and took him to the vet, I got a closer look and was very releaved!! I never saw rosco's; but twink became very fond of his and wanted the world to know how great it was! He got to where he would "floss his teeth"(yes I know that sounds gross; but that is what he looked like he was doing with it!) everyday! I started to worry that maybe something was wrong, because I never once saw rosco do this. I took him to the vet, and was shocked when the vet just started laughing as he told me that twinkie was just masturbating and that it was common for the boys to do this! Just masturbating?! I got to where I was almost afraid to pick him up before peeping in to make sure he was not doing this! I now have 3 other male's and have never seen them do it. It took me a while to accept and come to terms that my sweet baby twinkie, was a selfloving sex addict!! Anyone else have this problem? |

Wow. Thanks for the information! As an about-to-be-new-glider-mommy to two precious boys I'm glad I found this information as it might have freaked me out a little to see that if I didn't know they had bifurcated genitalia. After all, it isn't something common to most of us lol now that there will be no surprises I will know not to cut it off (or otherwise try to remove it) although I wouldn't have tried to doit myself anyway, for fear of hurting them. But good to know, anyway. |

Question: Do males really spray and what exactly does that mean or what do they do. |
GucciLove Posted - Aug 21 2012 : 09:33:25 AM
I have a male and i just wanted to post to the person who saw their baby "cleaning it".. just a head up lol... its actually him masturbating.. if u research it, when they kinda do a flossing of their teeth with it its actually that lol.. when i first got Gucci, a few weeks into it i saw it in his pouch and i thought it was a string, when i realized it was attatched i was so taken back lol.. a week later when i saw it again i saw there was 2 and i went straight to google bc i wasnt sure if i was seeing things correct or if i was going crazy. sure enough it was what i thought it was and i was laughing with my family for a good week about it haha |
yecats Posted - Aug 08 2012 : 02:07:01 AM
I was a little confused the first time I saw my baby's buisiness too, but I figured it out pretty quick. Without any thoughts of scissors! People have done that?!?!?! I am mortified :O |
