Hello All,
I volunteer with a County, Animal Care and Control. A person turned in their, male?, Sugar Glider that they have had for 6 months and could not take with them as they are moving out of the country. The shelter is not allowed to adopt out in California, which brings me here. I am looking for a rescue that can help this boy. I had found one in NV but they relocated to Texas. Does anyone know of a rescue who can help this boy?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Stacy

LOL, I am so sorry for the double posting. I did not know there was a second page and thought I posted wrong. See I told you all I didn't know how to use this board. I wish California would change their laws. He was adorable.

I just wanted to finish this thread. He is safe and will have 4 friends, if they will accept him. At least his diet will be taken care of. He didn't know what to do with the worm they gave him. I know he will get the hang of it and hopefully live a long happy life.
Take care all!

Thanks for looking out for him, Stacy! :)

This does NOT need to turn into a heated thread about those of us that have gliders in California, fact of the matter is that there are too many here for anyone to say "let's take all the gliders out of California."

IF you are caught or turn yourself in, yes they do give you a window of opportunity to escort the glider out of state. If you chose to not take that opportunity, then the glider's life is in the officer's hand and they do as they please.

This was taken from a California Ferrets website.

quote:
What if Fish and Game Came Knocking on Your Door: Know Your Rights!

By California Domestic Ferret Association

Due to the constant threat of confiscation and euthanasia, and the impediments to proper veterinary care caused by its "illegal" status, the California Domestic Ferret Association (CDFA) does not encourage ownership or possession of this pet in California. However, we do recognize that there are an estimated 500,000 ferrets residing in California, and for that reason we want to provide the following helpful information. This information is based on the California Department of Fish and Game's Civil Code book, section 671.3.

When a Fish and Game warden or a police officer knocks on your door, you DO NOT have to allow them entry without a properly signed search warrant. This search warned must show "probable cause" (for example, if your neighbor reported you, his name must appear on the search warrant).

If they have a search warrant that meets the above criteria, and they find domestic ferrets on your property or in your home, you have the right to make decisions regarding your pet's safe transport out-of-state:

1. At your expense, you may choose to have them shipped to a permanent adoptive home of your choice, in one of the 48 states that permit ownership.

2. You may choose, at your expense, to have them sent to an adoptive center in a "legal state". Please be advised that your pet(s) will be placed in a carefully selected permanent adoptive home(s).

3. You may elect to have the confiscating officer handle the situation at his or her discretion. There is, however, no guarantee that your pet(s) will not be destroyed.

Now, back ON TOPIC.

I'm glad you found a place for him Stacy

I just wanted to finish this thread with the boy is now safe at the learning center. They already have 4 and will try to work him in. If it does not work out they have another place he can go where there is only two and hopefully they will accept him. I am just thankful as his diet has been garbage for the last few days. He did not now what worm was but should figure it out soon. Either way, he will be taken care of and as a bonus, my son and I got to tour the facility. I think the Bald Eagle was my favorite.
Have a great week and thank you all again.

I met somebody a few months ago with a heartbreaking tale:

Her aunt lived in CA and owned gliders. She passed away, and a friend found her. Naturally, she contacted the authorities.

The authorities took the gliders. They called the niece, who lived in (I WANT to say..) TX. The story goes that they gave her the opportunity to have them shipped, however she had a 24 hours window to GET there, money in hand for shipping. They would not allow her to TAKE them and drive, which is what she wanted to do (rent a vehicle after arriving at the airport).

She did not have the funds for all of this. She tried to borrow money, but didn't meet their deadline, and the gliders were euthanized.

I'm pretty disgusted by the story. Whether true or not, I don't think it matters much. *I* think it drives home the point.

I am very glad that the rescued glider will get placed! That is terrific.

As for owners in CA... it IS ILLEGAL... and you could lose your gliders at any time. Most breeders will NOT ship or sell to Cali because of that. (I won't)

Two year supply of food. Meaning pellets.

I wonder how much she'll drop the price once they're dead. :/

Well... Not necessarily. The problem I've come across is people overpricing re-homes

For example. This girl on hoobly bought two sister joeys for her boyfriend. Well her boyfriend grew bored of them and she tried selling them and their cage for $950....a couple of months have gone by and she's now only dropped it to $750.

$750 to pay for her irresponsibility... I don't think so

Correction... she now dropped it to $700...

Here is her original ad asking for $950

But as you will see here, they are not hard to come by

And as it turns out, one of our members lives 10 mins from me and is re-homing her joey because he's trying to mate with his mom and she can't afford to neuter him right now.

i noe exactly wat yu mean i messaged the lady and told her if she really cared yu wudnt price them so high and really just talk to the person and find out but she was rudee she shudnt even have bought a pair if they were going to just give them back:/

Ah, ok, I see where things got mixed up. She asked if someone were to contact here via private e-mail on here. I mistook it for her asking if she were to send a PM on here
KuroNeko Posted - Sep 09 2010 : 09:38:23 PM
I'll keep you posted regarding the rescue I e-mailed. Hopefully I'll get a reply by tomorrow.
StacyB Posted - Sep 09 2010 : 09:10:56 PM
I just went back to see what I did for Val and I clicked the send an email icon, not the private message below it. Hopefully, that is what happened. Your board seems like great fun and does so many things.
To Suggieballer, I am sorry but I can not just hand him over as he is not mine to give. This is harder because he is in a animal shelter and they are strict as one must deal with Fish and Game. I need Rescue, though if you know of a rescue that would be willing to pull and adopt to you, I will do my best to help with that.

How long will the shelter hold on to him? Are you pressed for time?

No, you can send someone an actual email and it goes to the email they signed up with. On someone's profile, you have the option of emailing or sending a private message.

I said private message, not private e-mail =]

The message she sent was a PM, that's why I said she won't be notified via e-mail.

I did just speak to a local wildlife center and they have 2 Sugar Gliders and seemed quite interested with helping me with this guy. He will be calling me back once he checks with his higher ups. I am so hoping they can take him and that he will get along with the other two. Though, will it be a good life??? I don't know. I don't know about Gliders, so would having a couple of friends be enough for him? I would think he would get handled as they do teach the public about the animals. I want to do right by him, I am just not sure what is right, though death can not be the answer.
I need to stay on the up and up or I will lose my pull status, which could lead to death for the next ferret that arrives at the shelter.

A couple of friends is fine so long as he's not alone =]

Does it have to be a rescue? Or could it be someone willing to take him to find him a forever home?
StacyB Posted - Sep 09 2010 : 07:13:48 PM
You all are amazing! I am not worried about the shelter as I have worked with the Lt. for 11 years and he knows once he has asked me to save something, I will pull it off. I do worry that the animal may not get fed the correct diet, so the quicker I can get him out, the better for him. I will be begging again tomorrow to let me foster, but will not hold my breath.
If all else fails, I can pull the baby out through my ferret connection, but still need somewhere to go. If she has to take him short term, she will. That is a 7 hour drive one way, which I don't love but will do, but would be better if I was taking to the actual person who could take care of him properly and find him a forever home.
The shelter he is at right now, is not the one I volunteer out of, so I can't keep an eye on him and bring him what he needs. I am going to have to trust that they will.
Sorry, that I just went on and on but to answer your question, there should be no reason for them to put him down or they would of never contacted me.
KuroNeko Posted - Sep 09 2010 : 06:31:51 PM
When you receive a private message, it is receive here. Not your e-mail.

The rescue I mentioned in the post prior is located in Santa Clarita Valley. Los Angeles County. About 35 miles northwest of downtown of Los Angeles.
I found the old e-mail and sent them a message to validate that the e-mail is still working.

I told them about your situation and asked them to provide information about what they know regarding sugar gliders. As I mentioned I want to make sure they are actually knowledgeable before providing you with their information.

How long will the shelter hold on to him? Are you pressed for time?

...or if someone sends you a private message through here, it will blink red at the top where it says "private messages".

Yes, it should
StacyB Posted - Sep 09 2010 : 06:24:40 PM
Thank you. Normally, I do dog, cat and ferret rescue but I know those who I am dealing with. This I have no clue and was excited to find Gail though sadly she relocated. The shelter is strict, though will let me transport and I would hate to drive this boy to a place and then find out later it was not a nice place. That would haunt me. If someone was to email me private through this board, would it go to my private email that I used to sign up? I just want to be sure I am able to find any emails that are sent.
