Jett is one of our Australian members who rehabs native wildlife. This is not the type of glider that is available in the US. It's a yellow bellied glider which is native to Australia.

Cute critter. In all of my searching about these animals I have never come across this. Big as a house cat??? That would be cool. It would be hard to loose track of a glider that big. It definetly couldnt hide out in my sofa.

"Yellow-bellied Glider - profile
Scientific name: Petaurus australis
Conservation status in NSW: Vulnerable

The Yellow-bellied Glider is a large, active, sociable and vocal glider. Adults weigh 450 - 700 grams, have a head and body length of about 30 cm and a large bushy tail that is about 45 cm long. It has grey to brown fur above with a cream to yellow belly, which is paler in young animals. The dark stripe down the back is characteristic of the group. It has a large gliding membrane that extends from the wrist to the ankle. It has a loud, distinctive call, beginning with a high-pitched shriek and subsiding into a throaty rattle."

There are six speices of gliders in Australia.
Greater Glider, Featertail Glider, Squirrel Glider, Sugar Glider, Yellow Bellied Glider and the Mahogany Glider. They vary in size from the Feathertail about the size of a field mouse up to the Greater Glider as big as a large domestic cat. They all can glide.

Jett, they are so adorable! I hope everything turns out well with him. I know that you take extra special care of all of the animals you rehab! Hats of to you and your friends for doing what most wouldn't do!!Oh I forgot, we may need more pics!

I have read about all of these except the Yellow Bellied one. Interesting.
