Hi all,

Here's my latest random question, again there is no back story here, just curiousity.

What do all the various names for the colors mean-what do they actually look like?

Just curious because on one of the classifieds, one joey is listed as Platinum and one joey is listed as Leucistic, but they have the same parents.

I figure I have a classic gray, because Glitch is gray.
I'm pretty sure that Obake and Kami are white faces, although Obake is definitely more white than Kami is. Kami seems more of a blend between a white face and a classic gray (the underside of her tail is gray, rather than cream colored like Obake's is).
Ulalena is probably a classic gray--her color is very bad from the neglect she's suffered, but I'm hoping she'll start getting cleaner and denser fur soon.

the plat/leu thing is really complicated... basically, both are recessive traits (meaning it should take two copies of either to produce the color); however, if they get one plat gene and one leu gene, they'll have the platinum color even without having two copies of the plat gene. if you breed a platinum glider (who is plat due to one plat gene + one leu gene) to a leucistic glider, you can get both plat and leu joeys from that same pair.

sorry the pictures are so big... I couldn't be arsed to resize them at the moment and by default, they always show up huge on this forum ><

here's my leu boy:

here's my WFB girl:

and my standard gray girl (I picked pictures for these two that really highlight the difference between WFB and standard):

I was just about to tell you there were plenty of color variation posts, just use the search engine at top for reference but I looked and there really wasn't a color list with photos so I made one with member photos, lol.

Standard
Heather to coal grey with black markings.

White Tip Tail
A standard with a white tip on the tail.

Courtesy AvasMommy
Black Beauty
A standard variation where black markings are more prominent such as knuckles and chin straps.

Black Face Black Beauty

White Face Blond or just White Face
No chin straps or ear bars, blonde refers to coat coloring.

Leucistic
Eyes are black and fur is white.

Albino
No eye or fur pigmentation. Albinos must be the rarest color variation, I was unable to find a member photo of an albino.

Creamino
White fur, ruby eyes, and reddened markings in place of black markings.

Mosaic
Varying patches of other color varitaions.

Platnium

Cinnamon [& other Red Series: Buttercream, Lion, Brown Beauty, etc.]
A reddened, tan, and brown color instead of grey throughout the body.

Lineage on gliders from the Red Series should be obtained if being sold at a hig price as feeding a Classic an unhealthy diet will cause them to become Cinnamon. Here is a "Cinnamon" turning grey on a good diet:

They are beautiful, aren't they? I believe the first "true" Black Faced Black Beauty came from Lisa at Suncoast Sugar Gliders - I think his name was Elvis. I don't know who has him now or who is currently breeding for this variation, but it's definitely unique (and gorgeous)!

That was a very good post. I've known the colour variations for a while, but I've never found them all in one place and with GOOD pictures. :)

When I got Brantley & Salem, another glider owner I know said "Oh, they're cinnamons!" That was the first time I noticed how red they were. I hadn't noticed much the previous day because I was so worried about getting them out of the home they were in and into mine to settle down. Well, they're definitely not cinnamon. Their colour changed COMPLETELY over the course of just a month.

I have a little cinnamon I will be getting next month, she is such a cutey. I hope Tali and Menchi are able to accept her easy as they accepted each other. I haven't even been able to think of a name for the little girl.

Well, I think my odd lady out is a platinum. I am confused tho... there doesn't seem to be a difference between the standard gray and the mosaic. Am I missing something. My other four would fall into one of those categories I do believe. Thanks for such good pictures!

There is quite a bit of difference between a standard gray and a mosaic. A mosaic will have white in a variety of patterns where a standard would not. It can vary anywhere from just literally white feet to a glider that looks almost exactly like a leu, and everywhere in between.

It is possible to have many variations of shades of gray as well, your light girl could just be a very light, silvery shade of gray rather than a platinum. Platinum is a recessive color and it's not all that commonly bred for.

Thank you... I know she looks a lot different from the others. As soon as we get them more situated and clean I will take better pictures and post them. Right now, they are pretty dirty and cracked.

If it's the new girls that you just adopted that you are wondering about color, it could take months for their true color to show once all of the staining is gone. You may be quite surprised what they end up looking like once they get their health back.
