So, I go to see the little guy today and oh my gosh, where do I start? His cage, poor thing, is an old bird cage but there are twisty ties all over holding a million little doors closed. The entire bottom was lined with newspaper so he was walking...well, doing everything in his own waste. He does have a partially amputated tail and I am not exaggerating..he is the size of probably a tennis ball. He is SO big. Unhealthy big..his little fingers are fat, he can barely climb..No pouches, no toys..he had an oven mitt and a towel in the cage. The smell is so overwhelming. Slimy water bowl, dry and wet food mixed and not fresh..I snatched him right up and now he's here with a clean cage, fresh food, clean bowls, 3 pouches, a hammock, climbing rope and toys. So far, he lets me pet him and I haven't heard much out of him. I put the cages next to each other but he's out cold. The girls are barking and he's snoozing away.

I think they kept lots of food in the cage and at all times and they never once took him out to play. He was up most of the afternoon exploring so I don't think we'll be playing tonight. After seeing the conditions he lived in, I will definitely be keeping them separate for a while and I'll post pics tomorrow!

Forgot to add-I did keep his oven mitt in there for now so I didn't take away everything he knew all at once but it's stinky!!!

I'm glad you're going to give him a good home and get him on a healthy diet.
Poor boy, there has been an ad on craigslist the glider hasn't been taken care of in the longest time and is 100 dollars. I offered to just take him (the ad said they'll trade him for hedgehogs) and they said he wasn't hurting anything there and they weren't in a hurry to get rid of him.

I don't understand why these people just "hang on" to them? All they are doing is holding out for money but...it makes no sense to me!

Thanks, you guys..you should see how many animals were running around that house. The smell, the noise...ugh! Anyway, he didn't come out and play last night that I saw. I did get him to come out of that smelly oven mitt this morning and luckily, he went into a pouch so that's where he's sleeping now. I threw that nasty thing away! I added a few pics of him to my album but I think the camera took 10 lbs. OFF. He looks SO much bigger in real life. So, besides diet, how do you get an overweight glider to lose some weight? In the picture where he is on the bars, that's as high as he climbs. I'm going to see if I can get a new cage rounded up today because he has a hard time walking on those skinny bars on the bottom also. (Now that I removed the newspaper and put it in the tray underneath instead)

The pictures were taken before I changed out all the bowls and added his toys and pouches so it's a little bare in there! I had already thrown out his towel and newspaper. The kids are working on names:

Puff Daddy
Chubb Rock
Jabba
Sugar Daddy (because of the two girls, of course)

I said, when he's slim and sexy, then what?? hehe

I think the next order of business is a vet check.

Oh my goodness his coat looks awful. I know they all have those cracks in them but his is bad...which I'm not sure is diet related or not. Keep us updated and perhaps he'll get a wheel and some excersize. And we all know he'll get some LOVE!

yeah he's a big boy... could be those "cracks" are because he doesn't have enough hair to fill-out the girth of his body? Not sure, but if you get him on a diet I bet that will improve. I'm sure he's very happy now Kylah - so good for you!!!

Lucky, when you responded to Sugarnanny's post about intros, did you mean to never put their cages near each other-ever? I have them next to each other now but should I move them?

The cracks in his fur seem to be not being able to cover his "surface area". Before long, he'll be a sexy beast LOL I will definitely update and try to get some better pictures when he's ready to explore a little. Since he's never been out of his cage besides pretty much yesterday, I don't want to freak him out.

As far as getting spoiled...OH YES!!!! I've already been accused over here :) I will absolutely update and I'm sure I'll be asking a million questions! I'm all for pointers for bring 'em on!! I'll take them all...

Chubby Checker is funny...someone said Fats Domino too, poor baby LOL

He is such a beautiful boy! Awwwwww dont give him a derogatory name. Altho, I have to admit that Jabba is very cute.

I do think his coat is due to poor diet. Feed him some good food and you will see an improvement pretty quickly. Also, since he had no toys or anything to play with, he probably didnt get much exercise. He will be very curious about the new things in his cage and move around a lot more. Do you have an extra wheel for him? We all know how suggies cant resist their wheels!

You are an angel for taking him and giving him a chance at health and happiness. He is going to fall in total suggie love with you. I truly believe they know when things are better for them and are grateful.

I know, Rita...I keep telling everyone that they'll be sorry when he's hot and sexy LOL No, he doesn't have a wheel yet but I'm getting a new cage and another wheel. I'm honestly afraid he'll run once and pass out or something! He was wondering around the cage a few times during the day today just picking at crumbs so I know he's used to having lots of food at all times. He's also drinking lots and lots of water so I hope that's a good sign. Thanks for all the support, you guys, I really appreciate it and know how everyone always feels when they post concerns.

Maybe you could spread his food portions thru out the day? Possibly give him some fruit in afternoon or early evening - his protein source when he would normally wake and his veggies in the morning? If he is used to having food, be it good or bad, in his cage at all times, and he was eating as much whenever he wanted, he may be getting a little hungry in between feedings. Just give him several smaller meals for a little while until he learns how to deal with not having the food at his constant disposal.

Even with people, they say 5 to 6 small meals a day is better than 1 or 2 large ones.

Kylah, there are a few schools of thought on this. First, let me explain what I mean and then I will tell you what others have also said. What I mean is that you don't want the cages so close together that it is possible for little hands and tails, etc. to poke through into the other cage. Because they can be bitten off if the sense of territory is severe in either colony...

What I have heard others say, and I ended up doing this by the way... is not to have two separate colonies in cages next to each other - even if they are apart by a few feet. Why? Because the smell of the one colony may drive the individuals in the other colony NUTS. This was true of the more established "B" colony who were completely stressed out with the "D"s right next to them. So I put them in separate rooms. In fact, to this day, I still have to wash and change between playtimes or else the alpha male of the "B" colony will bite til he draws blood if he smells the others on me....
