My son and I decided to head to Healsville Sanctuary today to try and get some video footage of the Night House occupants. Being an abysmal day weather wise, we were in luck. No crowds because of the drizzle caused by the low clouds in the mountains AND the Night House animals were awake and ready to party!

I didn't get many photos as I was mostly taking night shot videos but I couldn't resist taking a few of the Squirrel gliders who weren't shy at all.

It was well worth the drive to see all these beautiful animals.

Ko, how do you get around the glass glare while using a flash? I think I see a little remnant in the third photo. Is your flash aimed up with a diffuser?

Actually good point there as I didn't use a diffuser or anything else for that matter! I stepped back from the glass and just shot at a slight angle. I'm also using the incamera flash which usually gives the worst results possible. I reckon I just fluked them :)

Great photos... Saw Rach's Squirrel Gliders and wanted two..but of course we don't have them in the USA.

They look like furry sugar gliders...are they about the same size? Related??

Thanks for the photos.

Sorry Roz..only just noticed this question! Squirrel gliders are bigger than sugar gliders. A well conditioned squirrel glider will have an amazingly fluffy tail.

You are confusing Flying Squirrels with Squirrel Gliders
They are two seperate speciess.
Squirrel Gliders are Gliders and are related to Sugar Gliders
Flying Squirrels are a part of the Rodent family, they are not remotely related to Gliders.

Squirrel Glider grow to about 300grams, have a pointier face and narrower ears than Sugar Gliders. There diet is very similar to Sugar Gliders except that they eat more insects. Squirrel Gliders also make different noises than the Sugar Glider.

Both Sugar and Squirrel Gliders may live within the same habitats but to do not intergrate with each other, however in captivity they can and will interbreed.

yes its true because they are closely related this makes it possible, evidently the offspring are completely viable and fertile.
This is why I keep my Sugars and squirrels seperate

The international news last week..showed in England a farmer had bought a brown horse. Thought she was big but since the person he bought her from did not have other horses just thought she was overfed...he was very surprised when she delivered a ? colt? ..it was brown but had zebra stripes on all of it's legs and some on it's hine side...seems the old owner had several zebras..news said this has happened before but is rare and only known imbreed of this in England....

Roz I have seen two zee-donkeys or zonkeys here in Australia. Zebra crossed with donkeys. Both were in small zoos/circus environment -one was an accident and the other was a purposely done. Zebras as a whole are of nervous disposition and hard to tame/train. This cross was made to try and breed an animal that still had the stripes but had a quieter temperament for easily handling.

I found a photo of one on the web which belongs to US zoo. It still maintains a lot of donkey colouring and look. One of the ones here was difficult to distinguish from a full blood zebra.

They are not readily available in America and most likely never will be.They are classified as endangered in most parts of Australia and like all our native wildlife, cannot be exported. A small handful were exported previous to these laws over 25 years ago but any stock that may be left would be crossbred or inbred at best.

Whilst in one state (and soon possibly two states)in Australia, they can be kept as captive native wildlife (not pets), they not suited to smaller indoor cages that are used for sugar gliders in the US. Remember they are at least twice the size of regular sugar gliders and need to be in large aviaries.
