Healesville Sanctuary is located in Victoria Australia. It started in 1920 as an Institute of Anatomical Research by Dr.Colin McKenzie. This eventually moved to Canberra as the Institute of Anatomy and the land became vacant for some years and then became under the control of Healesville Council for "public purposes".At the suggestion of Dr.McKenzie in 1930,it became stocked with animals with views of making it an Australian Zoo. Gliders, possums and roos were first kept and it expanded over the years. The story itself on the way is extremely interesting and long...too long for this post I'm afraid.
Over the years, the Sanctuary has been catalyst in leading the reserach into many native species. The healesville sanctuary sugar glider diet is one of many native animal diets they have developed for captive native animals. They also have successfully re-introduced captive sugar gliders into the wild! Even today, wild gliders of more than one species make Healesville Sanctuary and the surround Coranderrk bushland, their home.
