Tonight is the first time she has started to ride on Mum's back She is so sweet and growing so quickly. I have 2 other mum's with joeys in pouch due oop soon.
I can't believe how much they look like suggies. From the pics, the only difference I see is the fluffiness of the tail. No wonder so many people confuse them.
Yes if you dont know much about gliders its easy to confuse the both. Squirrel Gliders have a fluffier tail, they are larger, thier face are more pointed as are thier ears.
Kazko, is the audio slowed down? The bark sounds really deep; and the crabbing (to me) sounds like a chain saw in need of a new spark plug ... If that's what they really sound like, then it would be your "tell" right away!
The call is defianately a freaky sound to hear, thier crabbing is slightly different, its a little more drawn out I would say. Both Jett and Ko have heard my Squirrel Gliders crabbing before. I am trying to get hold of a video cam and something I can use to record them at night when I am not around, to disturb them as this is when I am more likely to get them calling.
Thanks for sharing the photo's Rach..they are really cute...but you Aussie's have some of the coolest animals....even your possums are cute where (sorry Kaz) our's ini the states are UGLY....
I'd sure love for you to collect some video and some audio on these animals.
For those curious, I believe that this is a squirrel glider call
, which is equal to when a sugar glider barks.
I also believe this could be what a squirrel glider would sound like doing a very light crabbing
.
I read about the going extinct Mahogany Glider. Those are sugar gliders, but larger and very hard to find due to their habitat being cleared for fruit plantations in Australia... one of the sounds you sent was labeled the Mahogany Glider. Rach - those squirrel gliders are absolutely beautiful :)
