I got home from class at around 11:30 this morning. For the first time since I've had her, Emolga remained asleep in her pouch when I came in to check on her. So, I figured I would carry her around in her bonding pouch and let her sleep. I was starving, so I went to the kitchen to make some soup. I poured myself a bowl of the vegetable minestrone I had made the other night and was carrying it over to the microwave. That's where the trouble began. Before I knew what was happening, little Emolga had popped out of her pouch (it's a drawstring), jumped on my arm, scurried down to the edge of the soup bowl, and began lapping up the broth. I was so bewildered that I just didn't move. She grabbed one of the cooked carrots and devoured that and was reaching out for another one when she tripped. Only her face and her front legs got wet but needless to say, she was displeased. She ran back up my arm, sneezing all the way, and then buried her way into my cleavage to dry off. Now I have a broth-stained shirt and an inedible bowl of soup. Somehow, I don't think I mind.

That's quite an adventure. I hope your little one is okay. Was the soup hot? How about seasonings?

No, it wasn't warm. I had just pulled it out of the fridge. And there shouldn't have been any seasoning. Maybe a bit of salt, but that's it. She seems fine right now. Is there any type of seasoning that I should be worried if she consumed?

Yes - all members of the onion / garlic family would be toxic to her.

I have learned from the experience of others never to allow my gliders or my bird into the kitchen when there's cooking going on. I've read too many tragic stories.

It does sound cute, though! She wanted your soup!

Isn't it amazing how these little critters have us thinking so differently? That is cute tho,...she was hungry & that soup smelled soooo good!

I carry mine on me all the time & like you I hadn't really given it any thought,...they sleep. I was washing some dishes in the sink when they all of the sudden woke up & started heading out of my shirt, needless to say, I moved quickly away from the sink full of water! Definately have to re-think our surrounding now huh?

I've known people who accidentally (of course) fried or boiled their birds. One person was spraying water-proofing on leather and accidentally water-proofed her bird's lungs. A sink-full of soapy water, a mis-timed jump, and the reflex to inhale caused one death.

Non-stick cookware gives off very toxic fumes at a rather low temperature.

There are just too many dangers to having your gliders on you in the kitchen. I *do* take a glider or two with me down to the kitchen to "help" prepare their dinner. But - I do that at a scheduled time each evening and no one is cooking when I do that!

Luckily, there was no garlic or onion in this particular soup.
I totally get the need to be careful when having your gliders on you. No one else was home, so I didn't have to worry about other cooking. And I really wouldn't have taken her with me if I hadn't just been going to microwave something. But I appreciate the concern. There are definitely a lot of things to think more carefully about now that she's in my life.

Exactly! I also only take them in the kitchen at night when prepping their dinner...Just the thought of what could have happened cured me! Not to mention, I imagine them getting away & getting under the fridge or stove & me not being able to get them!

My warnings and concern weren't for you particularly. I wasn't intending to scold. It sounds like you were in control of your kitchen! (if not your soup...)

Just mentioning the safety concerns - in general. Not to you specifically.

Your story sounds adorable.

I concur with valkarie, the story is adoreable and when people say things like this, they aren't trying to be mean. They are just trying to have you stop and think, because while funny at one point, it can turn disasterous in another. Don't ever be afraid to share, but I am glad others said something because I never thought of that and I have my gliders on me a lot when I'm in the kitchen and I completely forgot about their tiny lungs and inhaling any fumes!

I'm glad this turned out to be ok, it gave me an idea tho. Why not make a batch of glider veggie soup for my gliders? Use homemade veggie stock use all glider safe veggies and freeze small portions to feed as a variety option. I'm gonna get on that asap.

And just like everybody else I have a dinner helper glider who I bring to help everynight because she enjoys it so much but I do have to be careful because she loves exploring anything I'm doing. Ill have to uplaod the pictures of her explorinjg my purse the other night.

Hmmm.... this gives me an idea! Maybe I'll take some of my deer stock and blanch the veggies in it - if there is no salt or garlic or onions, and deer IS very lean...
