My females will also crab at the babies still in the pouch... but only towards the end of the term. I would guess (being a mom myself) that they are terribly uncomfortable.
Belly so big that they can hardly climb or walk... little extremeties sticking out, getting in the way...

Oh! and I cant forget to mention that some babies DO release the nipple temporarily ~(sp?) while they are still in the pouch. Usually just a few days before coming OOP... Ive heard them 'fussing' while still in the pouch.
Well imagine them deciding they're hungry again... its dark in there... and CHOMP! (I'd certainly crab! :)
