Subject: Confused about Weaning.

I read the recent post about joeys being weaned from the mother too soon. I am confused about when it's safe for a baby glider to come home with me from a breeder. I am still on several waiting lists for my first glider and had hoped to bring a female home with me as soon as it's safe to begin a bonding process while she's young. I had previously told breeders I wanted them as soon OOP as I could. Does the term "Out of Pouch" refer to the time at which a joey intially emerges from the pouch, albiet for short periods at a time, or when they're completely independant of their mother's nutrition and are eating entirely on their own? I would have thought even two weeks after complete nutritional independance from the mother would be sufficient to take a glider from it's mother. Just looking at my book now, it says, on "Selling Weanlings" that "Once the babies are eating on their ownm, without any encouragement, they are ready for their new homes." I was relying on the judgement of the breeders to let me know when they're available. Perhaps I shouldn't.
