Chris, you can draw his medicine into the syringe and then a tiny bit of juice. Thats how we got our boys to take their meds.
I will give this a try tonight. I've decided that if I'm still having issues getting him to take it orally I'm going back to the vet tomorrow for an antibiotic shot. quote: Was it your vet that told you to keep him as still as possible? I don't know about keeping him in his pouch during his most active times. I would still have him out and let him play some. I know that my gliders would be VERY stressed out if they were held captive in a pouch during their natural play time. Just a thought. Might want to look into that.
My vet did recommend this but I've also gotten this advice from a couple sources, that I shouldn't let him over-exert himself and I think this a good idea. Last night I don't think he was in the mood for play-time and spent 95% of the first 24 hours happily snuggling. I feel this was vitally important in keeping him calm and less stressed. Now that he seems more alert we've actually had an hour of tent time. He ran around a couple times, spent about 10 minutes grooming (not the wound, he's licked it but not really tried chewing on it)then climbed down my shirt and went back to sleep. As he gets better I think he will become more interested in playing and I'll feel better about having him run around. He's doing well, eating on his own and when awake is quite alert...now if he will just take his damn meds! Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts Update: Casey just got back from the vet. His left proctorial area is very swollen, but it is hard to know if it's bruising, swollen tissue or an abscess. He is eating/drinking alright and fairly alert but having issues taking the oral antibiotics. So we are now planning on Ceftiofur sub-q shots to make sure he is getting the antibiotics he needs to reduce swelling. He has a follow-up this Friday and if the swelling still hasn't gone down they plan to 'fine needle aspirate and cytology.' Please keep him in your thoughts, he's not out of the woods yet. Yesterday he had supervised play time with Cody and it went amazingly well, both boys were so happy to see each other and after a few minutes of grooming (we watched them like a hawk and both stayed away from the puncture wounds, it ended up being mostly head grooming and re-marking) they curled up together and took a nap. This contact seemed to improve Casey's mood quite a bit so we've been doing more supervised play time, otherwise Hes been very happy to sleep in my shirt against me for the most part. Keep your fingers crossed! -Chris slave4suggies Fuzzy Wuzzy USA 1101 Posts I'm glad he's doing well. I understand how you want to be very protective of him. Since he seemed to perk up around Cody, maybe put them together. He may be getting stressed by being away from him. i can imagine the conversation. Casey--Dude, did you see what that lion did to me? It was HUGE, I was surrounded by them, but one got me. Cody-- Oh right, it was a CAT not a lion and there was only one. Casey--It was a big cat though!! Cody---WIMP!! Casey-- Hey, I'm hurt, look!! Cody-- Dude, does that hurt? Casey-- Yeah it hurts. Cody-- Here let me make things better (starts grooming Casey) Casey-- Oh that feels better. I miss you Cody-- I know, I miss you too. But our human tree is doing the best for us. We will be together soon. Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts Update: It's been a couple of days since I updated so here it is. Everything mentioned about cat saliva is right on. Monday we had a follow-up with my regular vet and it was obvious their was some decent swelling going on. We were given some sub-q antibiotic shots to give Casey since he was not cooperating with the oral meds and some pain killers to help with inflammation. She told us if the swelling did not go down she would do an aspiration on Friday. However by Monday night he was not doing well, very lethargic and he was not moving his right arm much and it scared me enough that I ended up calling Ed and Gail again in a fit of tears. He said it sounded like an infection or abscess and was once agian very helpful. At about 4:40am (after a 30 minute nap) my roommate woke me to let me know that while he was much more alert, he would not leave the wound area alone. Up to this point he was very good about not messing with it and we were still doing 24 hour watch with him so he was never left unmonitored with his wound. But now we had to put the e-collar on him. By 8 am the would had a distinctive 'rotting' smell and we called the University of Illinois Small animal clinic and set up an appointment to have the area surgically drained and cleaned. He had his first surgery yesterday at 3pm and handled it well, but the abscess was pretty bad. They cleaned and packed it with sterile gauze and antibiotic ointment. He stayed at the hospital for monitoring last night and we were told he was alert and drinking/eating. He had a second surgery this morning at 9am and while not out of the woods by ANY means they are hopeful. This vet is GREAT and I know she will do anything necessary to provide Casey with the best care possible. He is staying tonight for continued 24-hour care and we are going to take it one day at a time. We are hoping to have tentative culture results tomorrow so we can be specific with treatment. Please keep my boy in your thoughts. This has been the most stressful experience and He can use all the warm fuzzies possible to keep the will to fight off this infection. Even after the first night of full sleep since last wednesday I feel like I am in a dream and always close to tears. I just want my boy back. This has been so hard on Cody too, who just doesn't understand why his brother is not with him. I'm afraid I've been spoiling him rotten in guilt. If nothing else I hope this experience emphsises why cats(dogs) and gliders can NOT be 'friends' or trusted...not once, not ever. In hopes -chris

I just wanted to mention that when my roommate and I read this we both laughed out loud...and at a time when we were both stressed...so thank you slave4suggies for helping us find the humor in an otherwise crappy week, we've been refering to it now at the 'lion incident.' <3 Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts quote: Originally posted by Omis n Kais g-ma
Thanks for the info Ed. And Cody is so spoiled. By the time Casey comes back, he won't recognize Cody because he'll be a few grams heavier with all the extra mealies. Its cutr how it looks like you taught him to kiss.
I did teach them to kiss for a treat. It actually didn't take long, Casey had it figured out in less than two hours...Cody was a little slower. Casey gets so excited that he will run up me, grab my lower lip with one of his cute hands and keep a hold of it while waiting for his treat so he can kiss faster. The only problem is that if I'm too slow giving Casey his treat he'll 'kiss' look for his 'treat' and when it's not there, he start pulling on my lip and kissing harder...and that can lead to "friendly" lip-nips the slower I take to respond. Casey will actually kiss other people now, Cody - not so much...I hope he fully recovers. Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts quote: Originally posted by valkyriemome
Just watched your video and then had to come here, as I'd obviously missed an update or two. Wow - you are AWESOME. Good for you for staying right on top of things! I've seen so many times where the glider improves, and then the owner takes a sigh of relief and stops stressing, only to have the glider go downhill very very quickly. You noted his improvement, but didn't slack one little bit in your observation and care. I'm not trying to blame those that do indulge in that "sigh" - but when you hang around the forums long enough, you see that pattern. Casey and Cody have a real champion in their glider slave(s) ... counting your roommate, too - who is obviously pulling some shifts also! I'm so sorry he has to be living at the vet to fight this infection, but I'm so very glad he is fighting it! I'm going to be checking for updates more frequently now!
aww, thank you so much for this! We have had quite the burdon of guilt between us, the encuragment from the forum and kind words have helped me quite a bit! I hope to walk away from this, good or bad, feeling like I did everything I could. Yes, my roommate has been awsome with being willing to help out! Hes become very dedicated to my two boys and emotionally invested in Casey's recovery. We are trying to stay positive, but inderstand the severity of the situation. This past Thursday was one week since the 'lion incident' (giggle) and next Tuesday will be one week since he's been staying at the hospital. Thanks! <3 Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts Casey Came home yesterday!!! They did their final cleaning, debridement, and cut clean margins yesterday. They finished by packing the wound with six gentomicin antibiotic-impregnated beads and closed with interdermal sutures. The beads are slow release and should deliver the antibiotics directly into the area. He still has to wear the cone of shame but we hope this means he is finally on the road to recovery. We have a follow-up appointment on Thursday to check the wound and refill any antibiotics as needed. He is sooo happy to be home! He plunked down between my 'girls' and has been sleeping happily. Today will actually be the first day since last Tuesday that he hasn't needed surgery...so now that he not being pumped full of anesthetics we hope to get his weight back up and work on the mobility of the arm that was affected by the infection. Here's to keeping fingers crossed that he continues to improve!!!
