I know Alden. Mine was meant as a joke as well. I'm just so glad a vet has some kind of knowledge that can possibly pull this little guy through.

Lol, I AM a slacker. How do you know me so well???

Actually, I didn't want to annoy people with too many updates...I can write too much.

Casey is doing surprisingly well. Their has been some swelling and discharge but the vet said this was to be expected and as of this afternoon it's looking much better. His energy has really kicked in and he spent from 1am to 8am running around his fleece in the hospital cage, trying to groom, taking brief power naps and generally being hard to control...a first in the past two weeks. I will take this as a good sign.

I see the vet tomorrow at 11 and hopefully get good news. Chances are he will still need the cone for the next couple weeks and only supervised visits with Cody.

I'll let you know more tomorrow, thank you all for being awesome.

oh, I don't know if anyone is interested, but when all is said and done I am happy to share all the medical findings/procedures/meds and so forth if you think it useful.

Right...crappy day. Casey is back at the Vet hopsital tonight for another emergency surgery.

He had his follow-up appointment this morning and it was neither bad nor good. He has some 'leakage' so we were given a cleaning solution for the area.

Then at about 6:30 I went to do a hot compress and some cleaning when I realized several of the stitches had popped and I could SEE the antibiotic beads they had put in the wound. One call later and we had to head in for an emergency surgery because the stitching was continuous and there was a decent chance the whole thing could unravel. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I don't do blood and I don't do wounds on animals...can handle it with people but NOT my babies...not handling this very well at all.

We will find out later how the surgery went...so freaking upset...damn it, damn it.

It's gonna be ok, hon. It really is. Wow - you are SUCH a good mom! So observant and on-top of things with your boy!

I know you are upset - but... you were right there on top of it, and did all the right things.

Prayers are being said as we speak. Sounds like you got you one awesome vet. I am so hoping Casey pulls through all this. You are such a good glider mommy to be so attentive and notice something amiss before it becomes a disaster. Casey has such a huge following and so many cheerleaders here.

Casey made it through surgery alright. Their was good news/bad news. Good news was that the top and bottom part of the wound had started healing and was accepting the antibiotic beads. The bad part was the middle of the wound still had some dying material and they think the hot compresses softened the area enough for the dead skin to release the stitches. It was good they took care of it asap because the wound was becoming 'unzipped' so-to-speak.

During the surgery they found one teeny-tiny pocket of infection but they cleaned it and put one bead in the area. On the bright side they were able to reduce the beads from 6 to 4 because the wound had done enough healing that 6 were no longer necessary. He has external stitches now because of how the wound is healing but he is coming back home today...YAY!

16 days after the 'lion incident' and Casey is still with us, but still fighting infection. I don't find those pictures of gliders with other pets even remotely cute anymore...they just make my heart palpitate! I'm glad I've never been interested in breeding because the scare of one of my gliders becoming injured is just too much...abscesses are NASTY business.

I can't express how much the support here has meant to me. I do not have any other glider friends who 'get' the type of bond you develop. I'm even more sure a few of them think I'm off my rocker at the size of the vet bill...but I know you guys get it. Thank you.

If you are interested here is what the wound looked like yesterday before the stitches popped. You can see the area in the middle where the skin just looks dead. It's wet because the vet had just cleaned it.

Thanks for fixing it. Didn't realize it was under his little arm. I think the little guy deserves an extra mealie and extra kisses. Was the black stuff the antibiotic beeds or the stitches? He looks good. Stay positive

I believe that black stuff is stitches. The punctures were more on the chest but unfortunately the abscess was so large that the stitches ended up under the arm after the necrotic tissue was removed. He seems to be doing well tonight and the stitch area is looking better too...YAY!

late to posting but have been keep a vigil on Casey's updates. I am so thankful he is doing better. I am a HUGE cat lover. Actually, my fiance says I prefer my cats to him and would chose them if it came down to it,lol. I volunteered many years ago for a cat rescue. I had a feral kitten bite into my thumb to the bone. I cleaned it and went about my business of litter box duties, etc. The next morning, less than about 12 hours, you couldn't even tell I had a hand. It had swelled to such a huge size and I had red streaks up to my elbow. I went to the ER and literally was stuck with needles and wheeled to surgery. After almost a week in the hospital, they were able to save my thumb. I was told that cats have the nastiest (most bacteria) mouth of any animal. This didn't stop my rescue efforts, I still get kisses on my lips from one of my precious kitty babies but it was a real eye opener.

With that being said, I can't imagine how quickly the infection set up in such a tiny little creature. You are a wonderful wonderful glider mommy!!! Thank goodness you went straight to the vet and have kept such a vigilant eye on his wound. You rock! Prayers and hugs to both of you

Row - you don't get it!

I've been on the forums for years. I try to help people as much as I'm able. Some times I get so frustrated from offering advice, having the owner argue or refuse to believe, then having that glider die. It happens over and over and over. I see another ... hmmm how to put this tactfully ... uh... Idiot ... and sometimes I just don't even have the energy to respond. I can only shake my head and leave the thread.

Another thing that happens and I've seen too many times to count.... "My glider just got attacked by my cat. I'm crying so hard. What should I do?" The answer is, of course - "Why in GOD'S NAME would you stop for 1 second to post on the internet?!?! Get in the car and go to the VET immediately!!" Again ... after seeing this time after time, I have no more internal resources to help anyone and I have to leave the forums for a time.

To have someone come and post such a horrific experience, and then continue to do ALL the right things, and also come back and update us, and then continue to do MORE of all the right things... It is such a relief. It literally gives me fortitude to get back on the forums and resume helping those ... uh ... with less ... uh ... sensible instincts. Your posting here enables those of us who try to reach out and help others to keep posting. Thanks.

I love that you still rescue despite such a traumatic experience! I can't believe you almost lost a thumb...I don't think I'll ever take a cat bite lightly again. My kitties are all rescue too and despite what happened I still love them all...not sure which one actually bit Casey.

Do you live close to Indiana? If so, and you love cats, I'd love to take you on a tour of another rescue group for even bigger cats!

The nightmare continues. I wish I could post good news, but Casey is back, yet again, at the UofI for yet another surgery today. That makes 9 now...

I'm just too emotionally drained/devastated to say much more than the wound just isn't healing and it had some discharge and a strong 'smell.'

The prognosis is still 'guarded' and unfortunately every surgery has it's risks and the anesthesia becomes more 'dangerous.' So ya, I can't stop...well I just have no words.

We will keep fighting as long as Casey is and he has a chance of recovery. I may be selling some of my limbs and organs in a week, so stay tuned for that...anyone need a kidney? I can give you a good deal.

There are many, many people on these forums willing to help out in times like this. If there is a way for people to donate directly to the vet, please let us know. If the vet can take credit card payments over the phone and is willing to take payments from people, maybe they could set up a little account for him so they know where to apply donations.

Thank you, thank you for the kind, KIND thought! It's just amazing that someone would offer such a thing. Financially this is a blow, but we can handle it. Our little Casey is in a good home but there are just soooo many that arent. If someone wants to help, please think about donating to Lucky Glider Rescue (or a local rescue), they have been a great inspiration to me. When this the lion incident first happened they were some great words of wisdom from afar. I can not even begin to express the thanks I have for them or for this forum. It has given me much strength and hope to deal and cope. Thank you again for the great thought and I will update hopefully with good news when the surgery is done.

It's good you are keeping a sense of humor. About this...the wound just isn't healing and it had some discharge and a strong 'smell.' Is there a way to put a drainage sort of tube so it can drain out? Are they putting the same amount of antibiotic beebees they had before? Obviously they downgraded it too early. Prayers for little Casey.
