Alden, really? She's doing her best to care for Casey and keep Cody occupied. quote: Originally posted by valkyriemome
Come on! You really need to be updating us at least once a day until he's completely in the clear! You are slacking!! Oh... wait.... that WAS yesterday you updated. *sigh* feels like last week.
Lol, I AM a slacker. How do you know me so well??? Actually, I didn't want to annoy people with too many updates...I can write too much. Casey is doing surprisingly well. Their has been some swelling and discharge but the vet said this was to be expected and as of this afternoon it's looking much better. His energy has really kicked in and he spent from 1am to 8am running around his fleece in the hospital cage, trying to groom, taking brief power naps and generally being hard to control...a first in the past two weeks. I will take this as a good sign. I see the vet tomorrow at 11 and hopefully get good news. Chances are he will still need the cone for the next couple weeks and only supervised visits with Cody. I'll let you know more tomorrow, thank you all for being awesome. oh, I don't know if anyone is interested, but when all is said and done I am happy to share all the medical findings/procedures/meds and so forth if you think it useful. Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts Right...crappy day. Casey is back at the Vet hopsital tonight for another emergency surgery. He had his follow-up appointment this morning and it was neither bad nor good. He has some 'leakage' so we were given a cleaning solution for the area. Then at about 6:30 I went to do a hot compress and some cleaning when I realized several of the stitches had popped and I could SEE the antibiotic beads they had put in the wound. One call later and we had to head in for an emergency surgery because the stitching was continuous and there was a decent chance the whole thing could unravel. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I don't do blood and I don't do wounds on animals...can handle it with people but NOT my babies...not handling this very well at all. We will find out later how the surgery went...so freaking upset...damn it, damn it.
Some photos from our members Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts Casey made it through surgery alright. Their was good news/bad news. Good news was that the top and bottom part of the wound had started healing and was accepting the antibiotic beads. The bad part was the middle of the wound still had some dying material and they think the hot compresses softened the area enough for the dead skin to release the stitches. It was good they took care of it asap because the wound was becoming 'unzipped' so-to-speak. During the surgery they found one teeny-tiny pocket of infection but they cleaned it and put one bead in the area. On the bright side they were able to reduce the beads from 6 to 4 because the wound had done enough healing that 6 were no longer necessary. He has external stitches now because of how the wound is healing but he is coming back home today...YAY! 16 days after the 'lion incident' and Casey is still with us, but still fighting infection. I don't find those pictures of gliders with other pets even remotely cute anymore...they just make my heart palpitate! I'm glad I've never been interested in breeding because the scare of one of my gliders becoming injured is just too much...abscesses are NASTY business. I can't express how much the support here has meant to me. I do not have any other glider friends who 'get' the type of bond you develop. I'm even more sure a few of them think I'm off my rocker at the size of the vet bill...but I know you guys get it. Thank you. If you are interested here is what the wound looked like yesterday before the stitches popped. You can see the area in the middle where the skin just looks dead. It's wet because the vet had just cleaned it.

I volunteered many years ago for a cat rescue. After almost a week in the hospital, they were able to save my thumb. I was told that cats have the nastiest (most bacteria) mouth of any animal. This didn't stop my rescue efforts, I still get kisses on my lips from one of my precious kitty babies but it was a real eye opener.
I love that you still rescue despite such a traumatic experience! I can't believe you almost lost a thumb...I don't think I'll ever take a cat bite lightly again. My kitties are all rescue too and despite what happened I still love them all...not sure which one actually bit Casey. Do you live close to Indiana? If so, and you love cats, I'd love to take you on a tour of another rescue group for even bigger cats! Rowangel Glider USA 173 Posts The nightmare continues. I wish I could post good news, but Casey is back, yet again, at the UofI for yet another surgery today. That makes 9 now... I'm just too emotionally drained/devastated to say much more than the wound just isn't healing and it had some discharge and a strong 'smell.' The prognosis is still 'guarded' and unfortunately every surgery has it's risks and the anesthesia becomes more 'dangerous.' So ya, I can't stop...well I just have no words. We will keep fighting as long as Casey is and he has a chance of recovery. I may be selling some of my limbs and organs in a week, so stay tuned for that...anyone need a kidney? I can give you a good deal.
