Chris is so tired and drained that she forgot to mention we do have some positives. We are seeing some signs of healing on the main wound on his chest. The tissue is pink and healthy and is slowly.. and I mean slowly getting smaller. The wound on his back from the through and through is the one that seems to be the more frustrating of the wounds. The edges we a little "angry" as they call it and dont seem to want to close up. There is no real sign of decay and dying cells just the lack of progress in closing up. This may be the site of the remaining infection. We are still doing open wound care with daily cleaning. One of our biggest hopes now is he is eating a healthy amount and is holding his weight around 80 grams. No real downward dropping so that is hope there. His water intake is great and has been staying hydrated. He also has lots of energy and is very active. So while todays news was not what we wanted to hear, we are staying positive and holding very dearly to this minor moves forward. A very hard update today. Casey isnt doing the greatest, our little steps forward feel like a big leap backwards today. After countless bandage changes today he took a turn for the worse in surgery. While under he started to crash, and while he didnt fully code he did get close. They were able to wake him up but its touch and go now for us. He was under for 45 mins which is about 20 mins longer than his usually bandage changes which was added stress. Now we arent sure what caused the close call but we have clues. Couple things led up to this, we found a new pocket forming and it had to be drained and cleaned. Also the little magician pulled a fast one, and was able to slip out of his e-collar that he has been wearing for awhile now. Little guy is an escape artist for sure. Well he removed all his bandages which set his treatment back and there was a slight slime on the wound as we are still fighting the staph. The antibiotic we are using for the new infection is still only on day 2.. so I feel it hasnt had enough time to fully get rid of it but that may be me just being optimistic. We have no signs that the wound is septic or that we have a blood infection, so these are a plus. The pocket wasnt large but still is frustrating. It was very shallow and not deep at all helps it heal better compared to the deep cavities. The bandage treatment does seem to help to produce healthy tissue but with him ripping them out and access to the wound may have set us back. Only time will tell on that count. But with the new complication of his recation to the surgery, we just added more uncertainty. Was his reaction a fluke or are we looking at him developing an intolerance to the treatment. So we decided that if he has a major crash during surgery to not do heroics. Now they can push meds if he is distressed and will do thier best to stablize but if he fully codes they are gonna let him go. Our little guy is a true fighter and has beaten every odds that we have thrown at him, but he looks to be a long way still. While we are still holding out hope, it is by no means easy on us or him. We just arent sure what more he can handle and when and if we have to decide to just finally let him rest. Sorry for the delay in the update... was meant to have it done earlier tonight but we are on a new course with Casey. **Huge wall of Text Incoming** Queue cheesey soap opera music... "So last time". Well to rehash on Weds we had a real scarey close call and Casey almost coded. And here comes thursday with our fingers crossed hoping to God he makes it, and I for one am thankful for all the prayers. Our little boy while having some heart issues was able to pull through. It did also comfirm that he may not be able to handle going under for awhile. So we were left with some real tough options. Do we procede with the wound care they way we have been? Do we give up? What is Casey's quality of life and chances? We just were flooded with so many emotions and questions and Chris and I just felt like the world was crashing on us. I had asked that night when we were trying to come up with a plan, was there no way to do a bandage change on him without putting him under. If that is our hurdle (besides the infection that is tougher than hell) could we eliminate it to reduce his stress. The Doc wasnt sure because, well Casey is full of spunk and doesnt like to be man handled. I even suggested lets rubber band him arms and legs to a board...joking of course but not willing to give up. So we left the hospital late Thursday still unsure. We still have the staph we are fighting, his inablity to take his treatment, and a fear he was losing. We still had good signs, he was eating, drinking and his activity level is high. So we are just perplexed and exhausted. Really am thinking of starting a series of "Days of Our Glider Lives".... oh the drama! So we get the update call today and our Tech tells us they may try to do the treatments without putting him under and we will get an update this afternoon. Plus on a good note he was now a big fat 85 grams after pigging out the night before. We had our first real sign of hope in 2 days and decided to Celebrate by dismanteling the old cage in a orderly fashion and get it out of our house! Very theraputic to say the least for us. So at 5 pm tonight we make our way to the hospital for our visit with him, and an update on how today went. So to increase the soap opera of our lives.. our Doc was in an emergency surgery on a Bald Eagle and we had to wait another hour just to find out the news. When she gets to us, she said they had success at doing his wound care without knocking him out, but it took 3 Docs to play a game of tag team the wound and he tried his best to ninja fight them off! Thank god the Doc's kung fu was strong! His bandages were changed, the wound showed minimal signs of improvement and he was up to a weight of 86 grams. The Doc then asked us if it was ok to take Casey home for the weekend. She wanted him to be monitored 24 hours a day to ensure he left his bandages alone. Of course we agreed and are back on "Casey Watch" with sleep rotations. She felt we could provide the best care and maybe him being home could reduce some stress to help improve his weight and well being. So our little boy is home with us! But he is in no way out of the woods and we are still dealing with bugs that just wont go away fully. His condition I would say is guarded and we are praying for good results with him at home. Monday we will be taking him back in for wound care but as of now, we are treating at home with meds and a stong watchful eye. If the need arises or if we are feeling like there is any signs of regression we are going to get him back as needed. Thank you again for keeping us in your prayers! I know you'll cherish the weekend with him!
Oh yes we are! He currently is getting a grooming from a soft bristle toothbrush from his mamma. I just got back from the store with another load of 200 mealies. He had a nice little diet boost this morning of fresh scrambled eggs and some honey. With a good amount of water to help process all that protien. My shift is about to start so she can take a nap and decompress a little. Ok update time! So we survived the weekend with only a few minor incidents. Casey upon getting home, decided to grab one of his bandages and get a small part off. He was just so excited when he walked in the door, that he went bat crazy that he was home. But the doc told us that from our description to keep an eye on it and stick it out till Monday. Our bandages are treated with honey and so by Sunday they were getting a little dry and I spent a couple hours trying to find "Raw" honey to help coat the wound. On a side note, our honey that we finally found is harvested from Killer Bees... lol. I mean how did that conversation go.. Well dear we are getting in the Honey business, I got us 4 hives of killer bees... we are on our way! So we made it and took him in this morning. After his bandage changes and repacking, while still without having to put him under, we have some signs of moderate healing on the top wound. Good signs that it is trying to close up and come together and healthy tissue growth. His Chest wound is going much slower but had slight signs of healing. Dam gliders and thier slow healing. We have no smell of decay but we are going strong still on his antibiotics. We are now on a routine of bandage changes of Monday, Weds, and Fridays. With him coming home between changes. Which should really help the credit card. This takes some of the stress off him, but it does require alot on our part. We are now on rotation of sleep cycles again with him, and doing 24h Casey Watch. Will say Chris and I are very grouchy with each other, with short fuses... but we dont even pause to question is he worth it. Due to a very small area where he bit himself when he got his cone off in the hospital, we are having to keep it on full time as well. We dont need any self mutilation to compound our problem. While Casey and even Cody have always trusted us and hand feed, it is amazing to see how quickly Casey has adapted to our holding his food for him. He trusts us to rotate it and help him find the right bite. We have no clue what kind of spoiled boy we are producing when this is all over!. So as always keep us in your prayers, as we still have a long road ahead of us!
Thanks for the well wishes and prayers. It really does mean alot to Chris and I. To answer your question MRSA is multidrug resistant Staph. Its a really bad version of a staph infection. So we are keeping our fingers crossed that the drugs he is on will beat it off.
