It was not my intent to have this be a public matter, since I fully hoped that it would be simply and quickly resolved between me and the WebMaster of this site. I feel it is unfortunate that these personal emails ended up posted within this forum. It appears, to me, that the primary reason for the ill will this whole issue has created is not a dispute regarding copyright, but simply that Pawprint is making a fuss over it. If we had been approached before these passages were incorporated into this web site, we would have undoubtedly given permission for reasonable use, with credits as appropriate and with the agreement we would be able to approve the use of the material before it was posted. We were never contacted in this regard, and that is where this all begins. The fact that we do have a web site shows, I think, that we do want to help expand the knowledge about these animals. Otherwise, we would have an online catalog only. The vast majority of the content on our site is not sales oriented and the catalog area has only been online less than two months. Until then it was all informational. I also feel compelled to note that the content of our web site is, apparently, worth duplicating. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be here! The other response that seems to keep coming up is that, for some reason, it must be Pawprint's responsibility to read through the entire web site looking for copyrighted material. There is no simple way to do this. We would have to either sit online or print out the whole site (which brings up new copyright issues), then go through it line by line. Then, I guess, we would have to email specific line and sentence references to the WebMaster, so that he could then go through line by line and delete the necessary passages. This certainly doesn't seem a very reaslistic expectation to me, and is not something which we should have to do. We shouldn't, in fact, have to be addressing a copyright infringement issue. Yet, it has been suggested that we take the time to do just what I outlined above. I would either have take away from something else or pay someone else to do this. The WebMaster may face a similar concern, but - frankly - he is the one who infringed on the copyright in the first place. It upsets me that this is all being taken a desire on our part to make money. If you knew me and the specifics of Pawprint, you would realize how untrue this is. Pawprint, at best, breaks even. This is fine with me, because I have chosen to work with these critters, am committed to doing this and am lucky enough to be able to do what I want to be doing. Money is far from the issue. When Pawprint does do more than break even, that income always goes into bettering the lives of the critters here, carrying new items to enhance the lives of pets, rescue work or similar efforts. It certainly isn't ending up in MY bank account! Also, there are far easier ways to make money then spending 16-18 hours 7 days a week cleaning cages, packing orders, chopping food and the other chores associated with Pawprint and a home full of critters. Posting information on the Internet does not grant free-use rights to it, just like publishing a book or releasing a movie does not do this. Exerting our ownership rights to this material also does not make me or Pawprint bad, evil or unconcerned about the well-being of other peoples pets. I have already stated that I would like to resolve this in the easiest way possible. After all, all this ongoing issue does is take time away from all parties involved, time which I'd much rather be spending with my critters. However, resolving this does includes the material in question being removed from this site, or at least the WebMaster taking responsibility for his site and coming up with an alternative which is acceptable to me.
