Jun 19, 2006 Received Pican We roadtripped today to retrieve Pican from Annie Robin's daughter Chelsea in East Texas. Pican was purchased by them 8 weeks OOP on 6/30/2002 at Traders Village Houston.
Jun 8, 1998 Katja's joeys are male Well here it is two months later from my last entry. Katja's twins turned out to both be males. They have opened their eyes last week and are growing rapidly. It still suprises me how easily they take to human attention. I think I will keep these two together when it is time to adopt them out. I also noticed this week that Mama has another single baby in her pouch. I dont know what I am to do with eight animals... I think it is time for a much bigger cage.
Apr 19, 1998 #5 meets the world and Katja has twins Tax Time! I have been so dang busy the last few weeks that I have neglected adding to this log. I JUST got back from the post office to drop off my taxes. Whew... My second baby, or #5 as I call her, has grown so much the last few weeks. She has a very different personality than all of the rest. Katja loves to crawl into my shirt and find a warm and safe place to watch the world from whereas #5 specifically does not like that. Katja has never once crabbed at me, whereas #5 will easily. Speaking of Katja; she is now a mother with a set of twins fresh in the pouch. I guess my new-arrival male, Spencer, has been doing his homework. It is nice to know that Katja is now of-age and it will be very interesting to watch her being a new mother.
Feb 15, 1998 Mommas pouch is expanding fast Still no sign of the baby yet. It is obviously growing rapidly and should be emerging from Momma's pouch very soon.
Jan 20, 1998 Momma has a new baby It appears as if Momma has a baby in her pouch. I still find it funny how you cant tell that she is with child until after it is born and crawls into the pouch to grow a bit more. It is always exciting to find a lump in Momma's tummy. I cannot wait to find out who this new addition is.
Jan 13, 1998 Katja meets Spencer I have decided to call the new male Spencer. Lastnight I put Katja and Spencer together to see what would happen. First I put Katja on the outside of the cage to make sure they would not be violent, then after some time I put her inside. Spencer seemed to show partial interest in her at first and then more as time passed. They seem to be doing good together so far. I am hoping that this new male will become a decent breeder and will give me a good genetic base for a large family along with Kaz. Kaz has not liked the presence of Spencer. I put Kaz on the outside of the cage and he went nuts running like lightning all over trying to get to Spencer. I dont actually know if Kaz would have attacked Spencer, but I sure do know that he was exercising his group dominance.
Jan 12, 1998 Fourth sugar glider I got a new and fourth glider today from Greg Brondo. I saw him advertised on dfw.forsale. Greg had him as a Christmas gift and decided it was not in the animals best interest to be in their care since his wife was pregnant and they also got a kitten for Christmas. I purchased him for $150 along with his cage and other miscellaneous things. I was told that he was purchased from breeder Gena Yarger at Sugar Boogers in Mabank, Texas 903-451-9509 and he is approximately 6 months old. Tonight I modified Greg's cage a little bit. He had built a cylinder 20" in diameter of 1/2" mesh that was supported by three large dowels screwed into a particle board base. First I removed it from its dowel supporting structure to simply let it sit in a large round plastic flower pot base filled with shavings. Then I fashioned a very tall and much wider door from mesh material and strengthened the edges of it with metal rods. I attached it to the cage with wire and cut out his old tiny openings. Now I am able to put anything into the cage and get to the animals if necessary. I installed two tree branches and fashioned two separate locking mechanisms out of a metal rod. Seems to do the trick.
Oct 21, 1997 Baby Katja Today I finally named my baby Katja. Katja seems to be independent of Momma now. I can see her eating foods and running around the cage just like her parents. When I get her out to play, she will mostly sit still. Tonight I put her on my keyboard and she sat there watching me for a half an hour before I took her back home. She seems to be well adjusted to my attention. Katja is content spending most of her time cuddling in a tight ball with her parents in the nest.
Oct 4, 1997 Baby is a girl I have determined that the baby is actually a female. She appears to still be nursing from the mother. I have tried to give her water and soft foods but she has not yet taken any. She is able now to climb all over the cage including hanging from the ceiling. When I take her out to play, she doesnt move around too much yet. I can put her on the floor of the cage and she will quickly run up the side of the cage back to her nest. Often times she will climb on the back of mom or dad for a quick ride to the nest. I guess she doesnt feel safe outside home yet. I am still amazed at the expediant growth rate of the baby.
Sep 17, 1997 Baby is growing rapidly The baby is growing rapidly. Tonight I found the parents out and the baby home alone, so I took opportunity to bring him out to play for the first time. It appears to be a male. He has started growing hair, has a very long tail, and hasnt opened his eyes yet. He crabbed a few times, but seemed to start enjoying the freedom. I have a feeling it wont be much longer until he is running around on his own. It seems he is just a tad too large for the mother's pouch. When I had him out, he attached himself to my finger and I couldnt get him back into his nest. The mother came and started licking him and then started licking me. I am still amazed at how well adjusted these creatures are to human contact. I think the mother actually enjoyed me giving attention to the baby so she could have a break. Everything I learn about these animals makes me want to think they are much closer to being human then we would all like to think.
