Message: I just got my first SG, a beautiful 8 month old named Tobe. I have him set up with a nice big cage, lots of toys and resting places, and good food and so on. He was not properly socialized, and I knew it would be a tough road ahead when I got him, but I wanted to give him a good life. I have and have had other types of animals, so I am familiar with handling less-than-perfectly-socialized animals. What I want to know is this. Today I had him in a front-pack carrier for bonding. I had simply lifted his sleep sack out of his cage and put the whole sack into the front-pack carrier. I just carried him around with me for several hours. But every time I checked on him by opening the zipper of the carrier, he crabbed at me. I only did this once every hour or so. Then, at around 10 pm when I thought he would likely be awake, I opened the carrier and peeked in at him. When I touched the sleep sack, he went for my finger. I blew in his face, which kept him from biting me. Every time I touch his sleep sack, he does this. He seems so unhappy every time I try to be friendly with him. My main question is this: Is it better not to mess with him and just let him come out at his own pace, or do I need to be more assertive with him in order to get him to trust me? I am willing to spend the time necessary to help him bond to me and feel safe. Please advise me. Sarah, Tobe, and the Chew Crew
