If the worms are kept cold, they will go dormant and stay in the worm stage for quite a while. If not, they continue their normal life cycle and will ultimately turn into a beetle. The dark worms are headed toward. Toss the dark ones out if your little ones won't eat them and keep the rest in the fridge. By the way, you can get mealworms "fresh" from a local fishing bait/tackle shop. In fact, many K-Marts carry them as fish bait in their sporting goods area during fishing season.
