Wrong- black ones are dead ones. When they are metamorphosing into Beetles they turn into white/brown flattish things. I always find that mail order is cheaper than buying at a store, I pay $10 for 1000 with Grubco, most stores charge about $2 for 50-100 but then I have never bought bait worms. I like the conveniene of phoning and then the mealworms arriving on my doorstep three days later. With seven hungry gliders I never seem to have a problem with too many!
As for the black ones I would complain to the company about that and they will probably send new ones. If you are not already using grubco I would reccomend them- cheap and very easy to use.

: Mealworms are just one stage in the life cycle of a beetle (just like a maggot is the wormy stage of a fly). If the worms are kept cold, they will go dormant and stay in the worm stage for quite a while. If not, they continue their normal life cycle and will ultimately turn into a beetle. The dark worms are headed toward. Toss the dark ones out if your little ones won't eat them and keep the rest in the fridge. By the way, you can get mealworms "fresh" from a local fishing bait/tackle shop. In fact, many K-Marts carry them as fish bait in their sporting goods area during fishing season. You can get them in small quantity and don't have to pay shipping. Good luck!
