So if you are going to neuter the best time is when the joeys are still in the pouch, AS SOON as the joeys come out the male will try once again to breed. It will not affect how they react to the joeys or how they will care for them. While they are in the pouch it will give the male chance for healing and he will still know the joeys are his responsibility. If the joeys are oop then he MAY have already tagged her. It will curb his sex drive, but he still will love his mate. It will however help with the scent marking, be careful though after he gets neutered his bald spot will no longer be prominant, and the pom-pom will be gone. so be prepared to not be able to tell the difference between the male and female as easily and quickly as you are accustomed. As far as being cruel that is a matter of opinion, I personally call it responsible. If done properly it is relatively painless. Good Luck
